Baby is no longer alive but I still have rising HCG levels... Need Advice!

Hi. I found out I was pregnant and started spotting. I had ultrasounds to see how the baby was. The first one didn't show much because I was so early and the second one at 6 weeks showed a baby and a heatbeat. We were very excited. The spotting all stopped and I had another ultrasound at 8 weeks to double check on things...

We found out the baby no longer had a heartbeat. It looked as if it just happened because the baby was measuring right on target.

I wanted to wait and let my body take care of things the way God intended. They agreed to let me do that and keep taking my HCG levels week to week.

One week has gone by and my levels are going up. They said that it puts you at a great risk of hemorrhaging if you miscarry and your levels are so high. They are telling me it is unsafe to let it go much longer and want me to have a D & C. I said the only way I will agree to a D & C is to verify with another ultrasound... Not that I have hope but in order to do something so drastic I need to be darn sure of the situation. They are frowning on that too and don't see the point.

Does anyone have any experiences or advice to help me? I am struggling about what to do.

insist!!! we are talking about a life here and your offspring, not the docs...Id also let it happen on its own. Ask the doctor how much greater of a risk? Ask for some numbers, cause I bet its like the difference is something like 0.2% ...

It is usually protocol to verify with u/s that there is no heartbeat prior to d and c. Absolutely get another before doing anything.

Re: Baby is no longer alive but I still have rising HCG levels... Need Advice!

I would insist on a ultrasound! I had a similar thing happen to me at 10 weeks. I decided to let things happen naturally, but my levels were also going up. They explained that my body just was not recognizing that the pregnancy was not viable. I opted for the D&C a few days later because we were going to an out of town funeral in a very remote area. I am RH- and needed to get a Rhogam shot as soon as the bleeding started. I asked for a repeat ultrasound, but let the drs talk me out of it. For several years I had nightmares that I had aborted my baby. I know that there was no heartbeat, I saw that on the u/s, but at the time you are so emotional that it is hard to take it all in. So PLEASE make them do a repeat u/s, you need to know for sure!
I will say a prayer for you and your family!

I worked in surgery for many years, and we never routinely did an u/s before a d&c (not in the OR or preop). But I don't see why your doc can't provide you with one before the d&c, just for your own piece of mind. Hugs to you and I'm so sorry for you loss.
