what could be causing this cough?

DD has been coughing for a month now. after a week she was put on antibiotics. After 6 days it wasn't getting any better so I went back to the Dr. She was given Albuterol liquid. That didnt help. We got a nebulizer for her and that helped. Now she's still coughing but it's only when she wakes from a nap or night. We have cleaned the sheets, dusted the room and cleaned the fan so I have no idea what is causing it any more.

Re: what could be causing this cough?

I'm sorry to hear that Our DD is going through the same thing; only at night time as well. She's been taking some Boiron herbal remedies that calms her cough but it's been few weeks. We did get her more remedies from our acupuncturist so hopefully that will help.

I do wonder though if it's something allergy related. The pollen count in this area was very bad for couple weeks up until few days ago.

It could be asthma. I was told that asthma is notorious for causing first-morning coughs. If the nebulizer helped, it could be the culprit and might be worth looking in to. Sometimes something simple as a cold can cause a cough that lasts for-e-ver in an asthmatic. However, there are also some really tough bugs out there that can sit around even after a round of antibiotics - my son had to take three different ones to kill a particularly bad case a few months ago so that might be worth a consideration too. Good luck.

Her dr had mentioned asthma, that's why the albuterol was prescribed. I wonder if I should keep using the nebulizer?
She's gotten bad coughs before but she usually gets antibiotics and it clears it up. this time it's not going away completely.

yeah....reflux is when the valve at the top of the stomach is weak and the food contents leak up in to the throat. when lying down gravity "helps" the food contents leak. You cough to clear it. When u clear your throat after u eat that is another sign that the valve isn't staying closed.

just throwing out possibilities

but based on the history you gave I think asthma is more likely. Has she seen a specialist yet?

Re: what could be causing this cough?

I am NOT an expert on asthma by any means, but my son had a cough almost identical to what you are describing and they did exactly the same thing that your dr did so far - antibiotics, liquid, inhaled steroid. They had told me that the way that they determine if someone has asthma is to give them the inhaled steroid - if it stops the cough = asthma. In my son's case, it didn't, and it took 2 more rounds of antibiotics to kill some nasty bacteria. But then, my son's anatomy doesn't allow for his trachea to clear things as easily so he is more susceptible to gunk collecting in his airway.

Anyhow, I am certainly not an expert, just sharing my experience. I would definitely ask for more info on asthma. I do know that if the nebulizer helped, that means she likely has inflammation somewhere in her lungs, so it's worth investigating...especially if she gets these kinds of coughs frequently.
