Fair price for teenage baby sitter?

If I were going to hire a teenage girl to watch my kids for a couple hours from when I leave for work until DH gets home, 3 nights a week, what would be a fair wage to pay them?

I have a 3 and almost 2 year old, we pay $5 per hour for when the girls are up and about half that when they are in bed for the night - always with a minimum of $20 per visit (e.g. we go to dinner and a movie, but it only takes 3 hours, we pay her $20 because it took her whole night away to travel over and do it.) I am a cheap person though, so this is probably low. I think the acceptable amount around here for a "trained" care giver or nanny is $10 per hour.

I won't even be making $10 an hour! I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to take this job because I don't have anyway to watch the boys And I can't afford to pay very much.

Another option is to offer it salaried, you will be paying less per hour, but if you need a regular sitter, than they may be likely to watch them for less. Where are you in Iowa? I am from there and have family. I may know of a good teenage sitter near you ;-)

oh my. 17 yrs ago i got $11/hr to watch a baby (similar situation). i got tired of taking my son out to her house, so she would bring her to me and dropped the pay to $9/hr.

$5 per hour. Maybe you can find someone who would be happy with $4 per hour. That would be an absolute minimum IMO.

South Central, I'll be working in Indianola. By salaried you mean offer a certain amount per week? Any ideas on how much? I have never once paid for babysitting

Re: Fair price for teenage baby sitter?

I have family in Des Moines, Perry, and Carroll - all who would watch kids. My sister, takes her two youngest to a "day care" and pays like $150 a week for both and its "all day" care. It is near Bouton, though.

Would you qualify for state aid? I know people that have said they can provide generous childcare support, especially if you kids are preschool aged, because some daycares can be counted as preschool.

I don't think I can take them to a daycare center though because I'm going to be working evenings. I would probably qualify for state aid, but I'd probably have to work full time and I don't really want to do that.

$5 per hour sounds fair to me. Or you could do a certain weekly set amount if you know approximately how many hours per week you would need the teenager to watch the kids.
