Re: Adhd support thread?

Pretty new to these boards. Just thought I'd chime in that I totally get it. My son is 10 and has been diagnosed for 2 years. We go through ups and downs.

Okay so this is what the specialist says DS1 (8) has. Or she says he has a tendency towards ODD. I don't really get that. Can someone explain that? Also, has anyone gotten disability for your ADHD child? I am considering it. We are low income, but this would help since we have to get 2x a week tutoring for DS1 over the summer to help catch him up and get him ahead...so $60 a week or $240 a month. In my experience though it is worth it. I'm sure disability wouldn't even cover it all. Just wondering if we are justified in doing that??

ODD oppositional defiance disorder? my dd has this. I dont really know much about it. I do believe children can have both ADHD and ODD. I have applied for disability benefits for my son and been approved. I live in Canada thou.... It is through the child tax benefit. It was easy, my Dr filled out the forms and it took about 9 weeks and its extra money every month. It does help out. I have to take my son a lot of places to keep him busy. they also back paid for 5 years! that really helped

Re: Adhd support thread?

Even the best-behaved children can be difficult and challenging at times. But if your child or teen has a persistent pattern of tantrums, arguing, and angry or disruptive behavior toward you and other authority figures, he or she may have oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).

As a parent, you don't have to go it alone in trying to manage a child with oppositional defiant disorder. Doctors, counselors and child development experts can help.

Treatment of ODD involves therapy, training to help build positive family interactions, and possibly medications to treat related mental health conditions.

I just googled odd

Re: Adhd support thread?

We made it through another school year. I went to the awards ceremony for my 2nd grade son with ADHD today. It was nice. However as I watch everyone EVERYONE get a citizenship award, my son doesn't get one. It's so sad. He does have a disability. He even cried because so many other kids got SO MANY awards and he got two. One for completion of 2nd grade and one for social studies. It just makes me sad for him. I know it's hard for him to control himself. Especially when his medicine just DOESN'T cut it. While I tell him "It's okay, don't worry about those awards." I secretly wished he could have gotten all those groovy awards so he could feel confident in himself. Am I being childish?

No. those things are dumb! <--- me Not being childish I wish my son was able to get awards too! every child should get the same amount of awards or none at all.

so today my son tells me he has no friends at school and starts to cry. he says that no one likes him anymore because he hits them. he is really out of control. I feel for my son. I want to much for him to have just one friend who will understand and be patience with him. that will be willing to care about him. to like his uniqueness. we are trying to form a support group here in our smallish town. I just feel so lost.

Re: Adhd support thread?

Has anyone here considered the Fengold approach? Not that it solves everything but it makes my life a lot easier for my 6 year old DD. Her behaviors are almost gone and she can actually sit down and focus on things. At school we went from a daily report to nothing but positive feedback. The diet cuts out all artificial things(dyes, preservatives, flavorings) plus salicilytes. I feel like the peace has been restored back to my house.

We go back to our specialist Monday so I'm hoping we can reevaluate medication because his is obviously not helping anything :/
