Re: Talk to me about Quinoa

We just tried it for the first time. Here's the recipe we used: Quinoa and Back Beans

Everyone (including my 3 year old) LOVED it!

Well I dont know anything at all lol. Is it something to eat on its own? A substitution for something? Whats the flavor and texture?

I was going to try it once with a recipe I found on the internet, but then found out the cheapest I can get it for is $4 for a small box! So I just used rice instead. lol.

Re: Talk to me about Quinoa

they have it at costco
it's texture...almost like cous cous? we use it in place of rice sometimes, mix it in with stuffing, etc. everyone loves it. it's a great grain if you are a veg bc it is a complete protein. hth!

I personally wouldnt use it on its own. Its pretty small and light. Its oober easy to "hide" in foods because of its size.
It has no flavor (imo) unless its mixed in something.
Its main "selling point" for me is that it contains amino acids(protein), calcium, phosphorus, and iron.

ETA: I buy it straight out of a bin at our local health food/farmers market store (Sprouts) I dont remember it being pricey

Re: Talk to me about Quinoa

Part of why some people use it is that it has no gluten. So you can grind the grain and use it as flour or us it as you would another whole grain like rice. My kids eat it as breakfast cereal with honey and butter. I think it tastes better with meat or bean type things. When done right and served on its own it is light and fluffy and easy to eat. I think it has kind of a "nutty" flavor.

Re: Talk to me about Quinoa

We use it in place of flour. My grandfather has celiac and can not have gluten. The last thing we used it for was to coat chicken and fried it up. He gets sick of always using rice crispies or corn flakes. But it is very bland. have to add spices to it with anything you use it in.
