Help! My nipple is hurting!!!

I have been nursing my LO for 15 months & now he only nurses a few times a day. Over the weekend one of my nipples started hurting. It felt like he was just biting it when he was latched on. I checked the latch and it was normal, no biting. The next morning I had a small "crusty" spot in the middle. It looked like a mix of dry blood and pus or something . I didn't nurse him on it for a day and tried again last night. It still hurts and I mean bad. After he finished it was hurting on the nipple itself and throbbing. My breast also hurt. It was kind of like a sharp pain from my nipple and to the side and it came and went. I really don't know how else to describe it besides maybe like a painful muscle spasm. The pain lasted for about 30 minutes and finally went away when I put a warm compress on. It doesn't feel like a plugged duct, but that's all I can think of. Any ideas

Thrush comes to mind. So does a blister that's cracked and/or become infected. I'd have a doc check it out.

Ugh. I remember hearing about this, but can't remember what it's called. Verispasims or something like that. It can happen in any of the extremities if it is what I'm thinking of. I'll look it up tomorrow at work.

You can put a bit of antibacterial cream on the actual sore to prevent infection.

I've had this a few times, and it took about a week to go away. I thing it's a type of abrasion and gets slightly infected, But I personally wouldn't go to the Dr. unless it was gradually getting worse, kwim?

It feels exactly like a spasm. I had those leg spasms when I was pregnant and it feels similar to that. It really didn't stop until I put a warm compress. Right now there is a tiny scabish type of thing right on the middle of my nipple. I am going to give the antibiotic cream a try.

I get this with dd often. She's been teething since she was 1 mos old, and has had 8 teeth since she was 9 mos! She often changes the way shges nursing, I always thought it might be this. So I use Bacitracin ointment and it typically takes care of it in a few days. But if not, those pains could also be thrush. Check the baby's tongue for white crusty growth on the tongue. Good luck!

Re: Help! My nipple is hurting!!!

So, I let that side rest yesterday & nursed him on it this morning. It still hurt, but was more that painful. I didn't have the deep, shooting pains anymore either. He cut 2 teeth yesterday, but I doubt that has anything to do with this. It seems to be getting better.

Re: Help! My nipple is hurting!!!

Glad to hear you're feeling better. So sorry I never got back to you on this. My life has been insane lately.

The thing I was thinking of is called Raynaud's Syndrome or vasaspasm. It can happen to any digit type body part and is often caused by cold and turn the digit colors and be extremely painful.

I doubt if that was what was going on with you, but it made me think of this. Raynaud's can be treated with drugs and it helps to avoid exposure to cold and to apply warm compresses.
