Re: Crafty mama thread

I haven't done any from-scratch crafting, but I did manage to sew the slit on a maternity dress down to a more modest (for me) level, and hem some maternity jeans, lol. Got all that done last night while I still had some energy. Not sure how long that's going to last, so I thought I'd get some things done while I have it.

I can sew, knit, and crochet. I do plan to make a few things once I get energy and time to do it!

I might be making a few more nursing dresses. The ones I had are either winter dresses or severely outdated. But, I HAVE to get this decluttering project done first.

Oooh! That's a good idea! Do you have any patterns you really love? I've never made anything for myself like that, but would love to!

I started out by using patterns from Elizabeth Lee Designs, but if you have done much sewing at all, then it would be easy to modify an existing pattern to be nursing-accessible.

For a princess-seamed garment, you could make two extra center-front pieces, sew them together right sides together, then turn and sew on top of the current bodice, but make the underneath part have a deep V-shaped cut in it (turned or zig-zagged to prevent fraying).

For clothing that just has a regular bodice, you could cut two front bodice pieces - 1 where the top edge of it would end just above your breasts, and you'd add a tiny bit of extra ease on that top edge, and some elastic. Then the other piece would have a bit of extra ease on the bottom edge, and also with elastic. The pieces are then sewn together at the sides, with right sides facing up, and the long piece on top of the short piece, and then treated the same for the rest of the garment construction. This is an "overlap" style nursing opening. For the underneath layer, instead of having it land just over your breasts, you could also cut deep armholes instead, and have nursing access that way.

And all these methods can be used just for tops, too.

Ahem...don't you also crochet? Yeah...we're gonna have to see some pics!

Jennifer, those look awesome! I can't believe you've only been knitting for 6 months!
Oh, to have a little bitty girl to knit for...

I knit and dye yarn. I'll do some pics in a bit.
