Frusterated with low bm supply..suggestions?

I am a mother of four. I wasn't ever able to bf my three oldest. My newest edition(3-27-11), I was able to bf the first month. The doctor suggested that I supplement b/c he wasn't gaining weight. So I did just that. Any suggestions on how to boost my bm supply?

How often are you nursing? How often are you pumping? Have you seen a certified lactation consultant? Did you supplement with formula (this WON'T help your supply) or pumped BM?

I would definalty see a lactation . Suplementing with formula is not always the best but it wont automatically kill your supply. I supplement all four of mine for the first month (for multiple reasons) and then went on to have very sucessfull nursing relationship with them. It is possible dont' let others tell you different. Oatmeal worked great for me. I ate a big bowl everymorning.

When did you go back to work?
How often are you pumping?
Do you pump at home at all or just while away?

There are a few herbs that I know can help boost milk supply www.kellymom.com should have the info on it. Also, make sure you are drinking and eating enough and getting some rest. That will all help. GL. Also, I second the consultation with a lactation consultant and maybe search out La Leche league - they can give you lots of help.

Good advice above. Lactation consultants are available through WIC if you don't have the money to see one on your own, and often through the hospital where you delivered as well...Just FYI...

I would also add that I am going through a similar low supply period and have really focused on my son while Im pumping, rather than trying to work at the same time. I eat oatmeal daily and drank mothers milk tea. I want to try fenugreek to see if that boosts it a little more. Mine is 8mos and I am having a hard time keeping up. My son also wasn't growing for a while. Rather than the formula, I basically exclusively pumped. It was a PITA but we realized that he wasn't transferring milk well enough and it helped us identify and solve the problem.

Good Luck mama!

Pump more often and when you pump keep pumping for at least a full 20 minutes even if you've already run out of milk. After a week it'll boost your production.

Drink A LOT of water. I always tried to drink 120+ ounces of water a day.

Lowmilksupply.org is a fantastic resource. I've never been able to make enough milk to exclusively bf any of my babies sadly because of having insufficient glandular tissue. But that won't stop me from BFing! I nurse frequently & before supplementing with donor breast milk. And I used a SNS for several months to allow my son to be supplemented while nursing. Worked out great! Good luck!

My suggestion is to nurse nurse nurse! Pumping is wonderful but if you can have the baby latch, that is the very best way to increase your supply. We make milk on a supply and demand basis and baby brings the best results!

Make sure you're drinking plenty of water and eating a well balanced meal.
Mother's Milk tea (available at Publix or online) helped me greatly when my supply lessened due to my birth control.

And you didn't specify in your OP if you did this or not but on demand feeding is a great way to make sure baby gets all the milk that they need. With my first, I did scheduled feedings and she lost weight, come to find out I wasn't feeding her enough :/

Good luck and I second all the pp's try to find a LC, either through WIC or your local Le Leche League!

Re: Frusterated with low bm supply..suggestions?

I couldn't pump enough for my ds for daycare. For dd, I'm ebf her and she's 6 mos old now. Here's what I do:

Drink lots of water.
Eat well (I often forget protein but it's real important).
Continue to take vitamins.
Relax when pumping (look at pics on my phone of my babies).
Warm compresses to help with let-down when pumping.
Pump more often.
Lactation cookies.
Brewer's yeast.
Steel cut oats.
Mother's milk tea.
Fenugreek/blessed thistle.
Nurse at home more often to make up for any supplementing.

Good luck mama!
