Formula makes babies less fussy?!

My DS is 8 weeks old and is EBF. He is a colicky baby with lots of gas that he has troubles passing.

Everyone keeps telling me that if I put him on a bottle he won't be as gassy making him less cranky. Is this true? I really don't wanna put him on formula but I just wanna know if there is any truth behind this cause it's kind of annoying.

No bottle fed babies have more gas.

Ditto PP, they take in more air with a bottle. I have to burp DD (ebf) and give her gas drops because she gets gassy. Some babies are just gassy I guess, regardless of how they get their food.

I really don't think giving a bottle would help his colic/gas issues.

I ditto PP. Formula babies are gassier because of the air they take in while sucking, and some babies might be sensitive to the components in formula like my kiddos. But some babies that are breastfed sometimes react to certain things mom is eating like lots of onions, garlic, beans, spaghetti sauce, etc. Is your baby more gassy after you eat something in particular?

I agree with bottles making him more gassy, it only makes sense but its been crazy how many people have said that to me lately, mostly DH's family.

Unfortunately no he's not. . I avoid all those things and more. do you ladies think a dairy intolerance would cause his gassiness?

Re: Formula makes babies less fussy?!

When DS was brand new I had lots of latch/supply issues and had to supplement with formula while I pumped -- it was AWFUL for DS. He was far more gassy with formula and even got a little constipated.

I think the people telling you that don't know what they're talking about...

That said, if he's really gassy and uncomfortable you might try eliminating some 'problem foods' from your diet to see if it makes a difference (here I have no experience -- DS wasn't overly sensitive to what I ate -- but maybe other mamas can chime in).

Re: Formula makes babies less fussy?!

DS was briefly on the special "anti colic and gas" (supposed to be for the more sensitive babies) formula while I was in the hospital because I didn't have a stash, and he was MORE gassy and his poops were stinkier. I hate to think what it would have been like on regular formula...

I had to give up dairy for gas reasons, too. My DD still gets gas but she is able to pass it and it is much less than at first when I was still eating dairy.

Ditto to giving up dairy. You may find yourself with a whole new baby. I did it for 3 months, then I was able to ease back into some dairy with no problems! By 12 months, I could eat anything I wanted and still had a healthy & happy BF baby!

Here's some info for cutting out dairy:
