Breastfeeding, with added vitimans??

At our one month well child check up today the ped said that since I'm 100% Breastfeeding & not planning on supplementing I'm going to have to give vitamin D since my milk doesn't supply it for her??? I never gave my son any vitamins is it okay?

Re: Breastfeeding, with added vitimans??

We had an awesome ped with DS1, and she told me that doctors were starting to recommend giving vit D to breastfeeding babies right away instead of waiting until they were four months or whatever. She said she personally didn't think it was needed as long as the mother was taking her prenatal vitamins. I didn't give either of my DS's any vitamins, they were both EBF, and they're both healthy as can be.

As long as your levels are good, your babe will be just fine. A little time out in the sun when possible is good too!

It's just a simple blood test to check your level of Vit D.

Just be sure to get her in the sun. Even dappled sunlight will give her enough vit d. Just 5 minutes or so a day is plenty. Unless you or your baby have dark skin, then you need more time in the sun.

Re: Breastfeeding, with added vitimans??

Current breastfeeding texts state that as long as the mother consumes adequate nutrients and the child is adequately exposed to the sun than routine supplementation is not necessary. So if anything, I'd just take the supplement myself if I suspected my levels were not good.

Re: Breastfeeding, with added vitimans??

I had a February baby and an October baby, and I never gave Vit D supplements. Both are growing just fine and a lot healthier then most kids. We get out in the sun a lot now, but didn't as much in the winters when they were babies.
