Uh-oh! Toddlers and chairs/climbing
Dd has now figured out how to move a kitchen chair across the table and up to the counter to climb onto the counter to play with the computer. We put the computer on the counter so she won't reach it but obviously it's no longer stopping her. I also worry about if she accidentally climbed onto the stove and it was hot. Besides the risk of falling, etc. I cannot leave the room for a minute to go pee or anything b/c she's that quick! She seriously looks for opportunities. I usually ask my 9 y/o to make sure she doesn't climb up if I have to pee or something but I hate to put the responsibility on her (in case something were to happen I wouldn't want her to feel responsible). Short of taking dd with me to the bathroom etc ant suggestions?
ETA: Just for fun, a pic. This isn't the counter, it's the table, but same idea. She's on the edge of the chair! She'll climb on the table too.

Re: Uh-oh! Toddlers and chairs/climbing
Ha Ha! Good for her. Welome to my world. And, it only gets worse. Our solution was gymnastics classes but the trampolines there have only made it worse. Our house is too small for a trampoline in our house and outside would be a nightmare with the neighbors who think its ok to use our stuff despite them being 5 years too old, very destructive and have been asked repeatedly NOT to use it/be on our property (my rant).
My solution is to baby gate the house big time. I don't let him in the kitchen without us and we got one of those long gates to run across the living room to block the kitchen and dining room from the living room. The more I say don't jump/climb he does it more. I just hate the couch climbing/jumping. He more does it with me when he wants attention now.

My 16 mo old just started doing this too. I gated off the ktichen but he still has access to the dining room so he climbs on the table. We have a newbie at home and he loves to do it while I'm nursing. I'm scared he'll fall off the chairs or the table...i'll be following this thread for advice.

Re: Uh-oh! Toddlers and chairs/climbing
Welcome to the world of toddlers. I have had 4 of them. Each one seems to get more adventerous.
The last one at 14 months crawled (he couldn't even walk yet) up the stairs, accross the bridge, and down the big slide at the park.. I turned for less than a couple seconds to check on his older brother and he was gone. |

Re: Uh-oh! Toddlers and chairs/climbing
Oh boy, I bet I have this to look forward to soon! My DS is already climbing & he can't even walk yet....
DH is going to build him a climbing wall on one wall of our bonus room. We are hoping that by giving him a place where it's OK to climb maybe he won't climb where he isn't supposed to (yeah, right.... he'll just hone his skills there and then use them in every other room in the house)

Re: Uh-oh! Toddlers and chairs/climbing
Yep, welcome to my world too. DS isn't into the chairs yet, but he is totally into climbing on the couch, then the back of the couch, then through the two railings on the stairs to climb up the stairs.
Very scary, can't leave him alone for a minute!

Re: Uh-oh! Toddlers and chairs/climbing
I think i say "GET DOWN" 400,000 times a day at my house and I put a castle in the middle of my living room thinking it would help satisfy DD's climbing urges.
Not so much.
