What fabrics do you like and why?

I just noticed the last post about bamboo had very few responses, and I am shocked. I have tried over a dozen different brands of diapers in every kind of fabric (organic cotton, cotton/hemp, hemp fleece, bamboo, bamboo fleece, bamboo/cotton, microfiber, wool) and bamboo is by far my favorite. It doesn't stain, stink or pill, yet it is super soft and absorbent and trim. If you disagree, I am eager to hear your reasons! What do you like and why?

Copied this from wiki:
  • Bamboo fabric is light and strong, and has excellent wicking properties.
  • Bamboo can be spun purely or blended with other materials such as cotton.
  • Bamboo fabric is durable, stable and tenacious.
  • Bamboo clothing is easy to launder in a clothes washer and dryer.
  • Because of the smooth and round structure of its fibers, bamboo clothing is soft and non-irritating, even to sensitive skin.
  • Bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal supposedly because of a bacteriostatis agent unique to bamboo plants called “bamboo kun” which also helps bamboo resist odors.
  • The structure of bamboo fibers make bamboo fabrics more breathable and thermal regulating than cotton, hemp, wool or synthetic fabrics.
  • Shrinkage during washing and drying is minimal at warm temperatures.
  • The cross-section of bamboo fiber is filled with various micro-gaps and microholes, so bamboo cloth is extremely absorbent.
  • Bamboo fabric successfully avoids pilling and shrinkage problems.

I really love OCV, it's so soft and doesn't pill or stain easily.

Re: What fabrics do you like and why?

I like cotton for it's washability, especially organic cotton because it's the most natural of all the natural fiber options. I find organic cotton fleece to be as absorbent and trim as bamboo fleece. I do like hemp because it's trimmer, but I don't like that it's harder to wash compared to cotton.

ETA: I'd dispute a number of those claims on wiki (sounds like they were written by some industry person)

- bamboo is no easier to launder than cotton. In fact, I find cotton easier to wash
- I don't know about the whole "more breathable" claim.... but I find cotton gauze prefolds more breathable than bamboo fleece (for whatever reason, I've never seen bamboo gauze prefolds, so I can't compare like to like)
- I'd dispute the whole "bamboo resists pilling" claim - just ask any WAHM who's received a bad roll of bamboo velour. Kudos to the WAHMs making bamboo diapers having to screen their fabrics meticulously to make sure the diapers are up to their quality standards!

My personal favorite is microfiber - that's what most of my stash is. It is trim and works great for DS. I haven't had any issues with cleaning it either.

I have 1 hemp insert and it's nice, but nothing all that special from what I can tell.

I have some cotton fitteds and I like them, but they are more bulky than my microfiber pockets.

I haven't ever tried bamboo so I can't comment on how well it works.

I prefer cotton. It washes the best and dosent fray along the stitching near as bad as bamboo.
And I dont agree on the whole "bamboo dosent stain" thing. My old bamboo fitteds from BG stained horribly, my itti bitti tuttos have stains, and the inners on my Tot Bots are stained too.

Re: What fabrics do you like and why?

I like cotton and hemp the best.

Bamboo is OK, but not as miraculous as that article makes it sound. And it does stain - I could show you pics, but I'll spare you. It loses its antibacterial properties when its washed multiple times, and I've had bamboo that pilled, as well. Finally, I think the article contradicts itself when it says that bamboo has excellent wicking properties, but then goes on to say that it's extremely absorbent.

I've never had any real problems with MF, but I hate touching it so we don't use it very often.
