my little night owl
i need some honest homeschooling opinions please....my 5 yro did K last year....she has always been a night owl (just like her dad i guess)....it was so much easier to teach her after her brothers went to bed....she is not distracted easily, but two loud boys in the same room make for some loud schooling sometimes (even when i give the boys something to distract them)....ive been attempting over the summer to try and get her on a more 'mainstream' school schedule....we are schooling year round....she gives me such attitude during the daytime when we try and school....we have talked about it many times, she gets privliges taken away for disobedience....it takes us twice as long to school during the day, bc she is just not motivated to work.....way more distractions with the boys there....i think for her sanity and mine, night schooling is best for us.....we both would rather do other things like go swimming, play outside, run in the sprinkler, go to the water park, etc....she and i both like to be active, but on the other hand is night schooling setting her up for some really bad habits??? when we school at night it takes half the time....she is completely focused....she works twice as hard.....she is such a pleasure to teach....but at the same time i dont want to 'ruin' her sleeping habits or something.....maybe this isnt a big deal to homeschoolers???

Re: my little night owl
Go with what works for you! That is why we school at home - creating an environment of learning for that works best for you all.
My neighbors children stay up very late, because mom and dad work opposite schedules to avoid daycare and mom works until 1:30 in the a.m. (home about 2:30 a.m.) their son started K this year (morning) and even with his staying up til 10-11 he did fine scaling it back to 9:30 and going to school. If it works DO it !

Re: my little night owl
I was your daughter. I was clear headed and able to work on things with concentration and actually preferred doing my homework in the middle of the night. Sadly, I did not get the option of home school. Trying to learn while suffering from major insomnia was killer on my ability to learn the studying skills I needed to succeed. If it works for her to be taught at night and you can swing it, by all means do it. Her body will adjust over time most likely and bring her around to being more of a day person but until then, do it if you can at night.

Re: my little night owl
I saw continue schooling at night. My mom was a night owl, and both my sister and I stayed up pretty late as well, even though we were used to staying up late and sleeping in till whenever, once we started college (aged 14 and 16) if I had a morning class I had no problem changing my schedule, even after YEARS of being a night owl. I still am a night owl, and so our my girls, but I just adjust their schedule accordingly.

Re: my little night owl
I am the same way and I was homeschooled during my high school years. I did most of my work at night and continued that path in college. I actually think it works perfectly, because, as you said, she gets her day to learn through play and also just experiencing the world!

Re: my little night owl
I think at this age you should foster her love for learning any way you can. So if she learns best at night then it's your best option. Even if she needs to change later on she will be able to do that. As long as she loves to learn you've got a winner...
