Cloth diapers = bow-legged baby?? Update 8/5 :)
My daughter has special needs and sees an occupational therapist through the Early Intervention program. While the OT was visiting today she mentioned that Clara seems a little bow legged when she walks and said maybe her "bulky diapers" are causing it. She wants to refer us to the EI physical therapist for an assessment. Um...I have never heard such a thing! I mean, if cloth diapers caused hip issues wouldn't that be common knowledge? I just don't buy it. I think my daughter walks funny in the same way other 1 year olds walk funny - a little stiff legged and wobbly. Has anyone heard this before?? I'm fine with her getting checked out by the PT, but I just can't imagine her cloth diapers are causing an issue...
Update: Just wanted to give you guys a quick update, and say thanks so much for your support I felt way more confident going into the PT meeting. And...no bowleggedness! The PT watched her walk for about 5 minutes and sort of chuckled and said she's actually advanced in her gross motor skills. She said there's no way her diapers could ever cause any kind of issue unless they were so big they prevented her from sitting normally. So, just wanted to let you guys know, all is well and cloth diapers DO NOT cause bowleggedness, lol!

Re: Cloth diapers = bow-legged baby??
My son is still a little bow-legged and it has nothing to do with cloth. I'd imagine if that were the case, most people would be bow legged before the invention of sposies.

Sounds to me like that's just the assessment of someone who is not familiar with cloth diapering and has no idea what they're talking about. I'm sure there are some mamas here who have cloth diapered a number of children over the years who are older now and have no problems.

This was my thought too...it just doesn't make any sense! I really like her OT, but it seemed like such a weird/uneducated thing to say...

Re: Cloth diapers = bow-legged baby??
I agree with you that it doesn't make a lot of sense - 1 yr olds are always a bit bow-legged, and wobbly.
I did ask his Dr about how his 'gait' looked when we went for his check-up and he was walking around the room, she said it looked fine, like a normal 1yr old just starting to walk. |

Re: Cloth diapers = bow-legged baby??
One of my best friends is a PT (and from Malawi where most babies are cd) and she was giving me **** for the bulk of ds's diapers. she said she thought he would only roll one way because the diaper was in the way. he was only 4 months old so was right on track and now at 10 months he's crawling everywhere and threatening to walk.
sometimes professionals (even the ones we love) say stupid things. all babies are bow legged and then they straighten out as their muscles get stronger. |

If cloth caused bow leggedness. Everyone over 35 would be bow legged.

Re: Cloth diapers = bow-legged baby??
wait, aren't all babies slightly bow legged at 12 months
![]() My pedi always admired my babies cloth diapers and said my babies were so lucky to be cloth diapered. And I had big 'ole bulky pinned prefolds on them cause I wanted my most reliable heavy wetting combo while out. |

Re: Cloth diapers = bow-legged baby??
I would just say it was an uneducated comment and nothing more.
