Re: Cloth diapers = bow-legged baby??

disposable diapers only came into our lives around the 1960s, if cloth diapers caused bow leggedness all of our parents, grandparents and great grandparents would have been bow legged. I would be looking for a new OT, perhaps someone who uses their brain instead of making random guesses?

No none of my daughters are bow legged or have any issues from CD'ing. Ummm what do they think they did before sposies????????? Yeah sposies haven't been around that long and most of the world is not bow legged. All I can say is ridiculous. Don't let them make you think your not a good parent becuase YOU ARE!

Ha! I was thinking just this! My brother and I were both CD'd as babies in the 70's, and no bow-leggedness here!

I agree with every pp. That is crazy! The only kid I know with severe bowed legs wore sposies and ran around nakey all the time. I think that was simple ignorance on the part of your DD's OT. Does your daughters special need effect her physically? If she has low tone or a deficit with gross motor skills it would be worth checking into otherwise I wouldn't worry.

Thanks guys I thought it sounded totally crazy. Her special needs revolve around sensory processing and cognitive development - in fact, she was an early walker! The OT has always made "those" comments about CDs (how are they sanitary etc) so I guess it's not surprising she'd jump to that explanation. Her dipes aren't even that big - I used pockets stuffed with flats.
I guess it just rubbed me the wrong way because it makes it sound like I'm doing something that's causing her delays. Blahhh!

Re: Cloth diapers = bow-legged baby??

OT's are trained to make physical observations and then attempt to figure out cause and solution. Positioning can impact development.

That being said, I am an OT. I cloth diaper my son and have for 18 months now. He wears pockets, prefitteds etc. I dont see CDing impacting motor development.

I would recommend doing the PT eval screen. The OT saw something in the way your child is developing that was a red flag. A PT will be more trained in gait pattern and alignment even more so than the pediatrician.

BTW I know a ortho Dr. that says that most very young children are bowed legged and that by 5 years they straighten out without intervention. He was commenting on that in the 40-70's there were tons of children braced early on that time would have corrected the issue without the bracing.

Just so I am clear, I am giving you general thoughts and opinions. I have never worked with your child and the Ortho Dr I am referencing has not seen your child. A direct evaluation from a PT will rule out concerns.

BTW OTs have a code of ethics that upholds OTs to be respectful of clients culture, beliefs, and choices etc. I would encourage you to say to her that where you respect her as a professional and like how she works with your child...she needs to respect your parenting choices ie cloth diapering without passing judgement. She can ask questions about them but passing judgement on how sanitary is not appropriate.
