Which side is safest?

Just a little background. We have a Prius and 2 Radian carseats (LOVE!!! them, we will not have to get a new car with our next kiddo, we could easily fit a 3rd radian in the back!). My 20 month old daughter is rear facing in the center, she's a tiny 20.5 lbs. And my 4 year old (about 45lbs) is currently behind the drivers side. So I'm wondering which side is safest for my son, drivers side or passenger side? What do you guys think?

Btw we picked the drivers side because we figured that in a crash, the driver would instinctively swerve to get themselves out of the way. So if our DS was on that side he would be safest.

I would put the FF child in the center. That is the safest position.

I thought I heard that you're more likely to get hit on the passenger side because you can't see as well what's going on on that side Maybe one of the techs can weigh in on that

ETA: least protected (FFing) child in the center, although I don't know how convenient it would be to climb over one of the RF seats every time!

I think passenger. I think because oncoming traffic is on the drivers side. And if you keep right on the hw, people pass you on the drivers side. And if you turn right on red and something did happen, it would be the drivers side. But I have no science behind that, just hours sitting in the car wondering lol

That's assuming the RF Radian fits anywhere but the middle.

Yeah that... I didn't notice that it said the RF seat was in the middle.

I've thought the exact same things, just obsessing in the car

At least I'm not alone obsessing about these things.

Re: Which side is safest?

I read somewhere that the driver's side is safest, after the middle, because the driver unconsciously protects his side first. I don't know. Somewhere in all that research I decided that I wouldn't worry about which side was safest. I have two kids, one FFing and one RFing. Right now they are each on a side, but when we put one of them in the middle it's my son, since he's forward facing.

eta- oh! I didn't even notice that the OP stated the same thing as I did about instinct. Oops. Read more clearly!

Re: Which side is safest?

I've heard that drivers side is safer (instinctively protecting yourself), but that the difference is so slight as to be immaterial.

From my own experience, most people I know who were hit in the side, were turning left at the time, so the passenger side was hit. Therefore, since I have 2 rfing kids, the younger one goes on the driver side (if they're both outboard) or in the middle (if one is there and the other is outboard). Once DD turns ffing, she'll go drivers side or middle b/c she wont be as protected as my DS.

That said, I really dont worry about it that much. I figure that if their seats are properly installed, adjusted correctly, and used correctly 100% of the time, and I'm a safe driver, then I've done all I can to keep them safe and I'm not going to stress about what-ifs.
