Re: No recess for first grade???

That's a shame. The American educational system is really regressing.
Imho, young children need at least 1 recess.

Re: No recess for first grade???

Do they get recess after lunch? Everyone (K-4th grade) at my school has just one recess a day, for 30 minutes after lunch. I would think it would be perfectly acceptable to have the kids bring in their own small, healthy snack and take 15 minutes or so in the morning to eat, use the restroom and maybe play some music to help them get their "wiggles" out I would just be very clear with the students (and principal) about your expectations, that when that 15 minute period is up, it's time to re-focus and get back to work. Hope that helps! Good luck!!!

Do they get a recess after lunch?

None of our grades gets recess except for after lunch. On Friday they do get an extra afternoon recess if time allows.

Re: No recess for first grade???

Get some educational music CDs to help supplement your curriculum! Incorporate dance/movement to "build in" a "structured recess" so to speak. Then you're killing 2 birds with one stone, so to speak

That seems rough, though. Hugs and hope you can figure out a solution to make it work!

I think that's really sad. My 1st grader get two recesses a day and has PE four times a week. The kids really need physical activity!

I agree with the others. Work eating and movement into class, it could be a great way to work in vocabulary.

Re: No recess for first grade???

If all else fails, I'd try to incorporate a "snack" into the instruction. I used to do this with my preschoolers all the time. e.g., laminated place mats with goldfish bowls drawn on them - put the correct number of goldfish crackers in the bowls (you could do this orally, since written numbers are pretty similar across languages); sort by color (match "red" grapes or bell pepper slices to the word "red"; green ones to the word "green"); sort by shape (cheese cubes or slices, bread, crackers, etc. cut into shapes with cookie cutters).
