I tried this originally and my dipes still looked a little dingy....
not fully clean and they smelled faintly like wet dog.

So after some reseach,
I discovered all these ingredients are laundry BOOSTERS only
so a surfacant was still needed to get my dipes truly clean.
Dawn is the only soap/surfacant I've used that am 100% confident is cd safe.
And it's WORKING for me!

I use equal parts washing soda, baking soda, oxyclean free, and borax. Works like a charm! I might try adding the dawn to the mix if I start having issues!

I've tried this subbing baking soda in place of the washing soda and it works well, too.

I've also used a half & half mixture of washing soda & baking soda as 1 part, and 1 part each of the borax and oxy before adding the Dawn and this works VERY well for me.
I just prefer as few ingredients and as simple a recipe as possible to make shopping and life in general that much easier.

No matter what combo I try:
Without the added Dawn, my bamboo and hemp smell like wet dog out of the washer EVERY TIME.
I've never dried them like this to see if the smell goes away, though.
I just can't STAND it!
So I NEVER FORGET THE DAWN!

I made a base to start from (the borax, washing soda, oxy) and did my first load. I can't wait to get it all tweaked for our water! So far so good on the first load.

I did this when I was trying to figure out just the right amount of the Dawn to use in order to clean everything but not create a room full of suds (like on sooo many sitcom episodes!) I like to combine and store as powder now to make everything faster, just in case I ever need hubby to start a load.....
Ha! Like that'll ever happen!

So how do you know what to tweak? I'm liking what I have ok, but I think it could improve. I just don't know where to start.

Same question for me. I'm doing the equal parts oxy, washing soda and borax. I'm hesitant to use dawn because of fear of suds. Any suggestions what I need to add?
