Yet another newborn stash thread...

DS has been in CD's since birth, but I didn't love his nb stash. We had 24 LL pf's and 4(?) covers - Prowraps and BSWW. The covers were sold to fund bigger covers, and the pf's have been gifted...so we're starting over. For reference, DS came home from the hospital at 6 lbs even.

So first of all...covers. I was planning to use BSB's - I hear they fit smaller nb's well, and they seem to hold up to wear. Thirsties Duo Wraps would last us a lot longer, though (and cost is a factor)...but I don't like how quickly the aplix wears out (and snaps are a definite no). Thoughts on these two? Other suggestions?

And...diapers. We'll probably end up doing mostly flats...we have some LL (which I find too big for small babies) and IKEA (which I haven't tried on a nb). I'd like to buy either more IKEA or some OsoCozy - how do they compare size-wise? In softness/absorbency?

I was also planning to get a dozen nb pf's for DH/diaper bag...but am considering cheap nb fitteds instead. GMD Workhorse, maybe? Or Snugglebottoms?

Thanks!

Re: Yet another newborn stash thread...

Well I like Ososcozy flats for newborns since they fit smaller. I really love Nikky covers as well. I would still get some prefolds but having some fitteds on hand wouldn't hurt. I loved Snugglebottoms personally. I have only tried workhorse in reds but I think they are really nice.

i love prefolds but this time around we are doing prefolds and fitted. i love goodmama nb's...SOOOOO adorable and tiny!! And I will be trying NB Mutts (I have 9 3SR Mutts but they only fit DS at around 3 months old, he grew slowly). Any other that look good, I will try too. I don't pay more than $16ppd per diaper so it's not too much to do fitted

Re: Yet another newborn stash thread...

I've never used flats on a NB so I'm not help there, but as far as covers I really like the thirsties duos on my 6lb newborn. I thought they fit really well, we didn't have any leaks, and they fit until 12/13 pounds (so they run a little small, IMO.) Thirsties aplix isn't excellent, but it does work, and it definietly won't wear out in the short time that a NB will wear them. I've never tried the bsb covers but I plan to get some for the NB stage when we have another baby. GL mama!

Re: Yet another newborn stash thread...

Thanks for the info. OsoCozy flats (or similar - Diaper Rites? Imagines?) sound good - I'm not big on unnecessary bulk on a nb. Glad to know that the Duos work well on little ones - I used them for DS, but not until he was in "smalls." I do wish their aplix was better, though - we had Duo diapers (which we LOVED) but the aplix was hardly sticky after just a couple of months...and those didn't get reused throughout the day! Ick. Regarding fitteds - the workhorse are $4.95/ea, and that's probably the most I'd be willing to pay if we go that route...we got by without fitteds last time, and didn't miss them...so while they'd probably be a little more convenient, we'll probably skip them this time too.

Re: Yet another newborn stash thread...

I really liked the bummis originals (the plain white nylon ones) in the small (or maybe xs, I'd have to check), which was teeny tiny. Someone gave me a few that were a bit worse for wear, and they didn't look like much but they were the best fit, and so gentle. The bummis original smalls seemed quite a bit smaller than my bummis superbrites smalls, for sure.
I preferred the thirsties sized covers to my duo, the duo was just a touch too trim. I haven't found the aplix to wear out- my medium covers were bought used and are now on my second kiddo and the mediums definitely get the most usage and they all still look great, and I throw them in the washer and dryer all the time. My xs and small sizes still look nearly new.

Re: Yet another newborn stash thread...

We are in the middle of diapering a newborn who came home from the hospital at 6 lbs 5 oz. Little fatty put on 2 lbs in a month!

But we have been loving newborn Mutts the most, with BSB or Imse Vimse preemie covers. IV is my favorite - bulletproof and no exposed PUL on the inside.

For PFs, we have been using GMD orange edge but i'm feeling like the fit is getting smallish and we have had to add a little doubler for added absorbency.

AIOs - my favorite is sposoeasy XS, and Dream Eze for overnight.

I'm starting to build a size small stash until she gets big enough for our one size. The mutts will continue to fit her for a while, and snapped down beautifully for the cord. For reference, she is 5 weeks and 8 lbs 13 oz now.

Re: Yet another newborn stash thread...

Regarding Bummis Originals - I've heard they run small, and that they're a good cover. How's the mesh inside? Obviously you couldn't rinse/wipe clean, but do they handwash ok? I'm assuming we'll need to handwash covers between actual wash days, as I don't plan to buy a whole lot.

Re: Yet another newborn stash thread...

the mesh is fine inside- we didn't baby ours at all, and I am SURE they are on *at least* the third child, probably more- and I am holding onto ours for a potential future baby. I just threw them in the washer (and the dryer because I didn't know they weren't supposed to go in there, oops). I haven't tried handwashing though...I don't know how effective it would be getting NB poop off?
