Is uncooked couscous safe?

...because DD is obsessed with it! I gave her some to play with while I was transferring it into storage jars, and she wants to eat it all the time now. Any reason to stop her?

I even showed her the empty bag and said "All Gone!" but that made her think "ahgahn" is the name of her new favorite food

Re: Is uncooked couscous safe?

Well, it's the same as uncooked pasta. Probably okay to crunch on a few grains every now and then, but I imagine it would be severely dehydrating/constipating, as it would absorb fluid from the body as it was digested. Especially bad for a baby/toddler, who has less fluid to begin with.

I'd cook it first, always.

The first thing I thought of is how you're not supposed to throw rice at weddings anymore because birds eat it and it puffs up in their bellies... I would imagine couscous in a toddler would do about the same thing. I doubt she could eat enough to seriously hurt her, but I wouldn't encourage it. So funny the stuff they love, though, huh?!

Thanks for the advice - luckily, she seems to love it cooked, too. I'll just have to hide the dry stuff!

I'd give it to her. If she gets thirsty, she'd probably ask for a drink, right?

It won't hurt her. I grew up constantly snacking on raw pasta. Grayson is always grabbing raw spaghetti and eating it. No constipation issues here.
