flexible soled shoes really necessary for 2.5 YO?

They're so expensive--$30 is about the cheapest I can find for a new pair of flexible-soled shoes (Stride Rites on shoebuy). Vs. the $10 sneakers at Target...is it really worth paying three times as much for flexible-soled shoes?

DD is 3.5 and still wears as flexible of a sole as we can buy, which is Stride Rite brand shoes. Whether it's necessary is a personal choice. I will say that DD walks much better in the more flexible sole than she does in the pair of non-flexible soled-sneakers that a friend passed down to us.

We used the soft soled shoes (pedipeds) while Micah was learning to walk. But went to regular shoes when he was about 2 or so.

Target has a brand called Circo that have flexible soles! They are actually pretty great quality if you don't want to spend the 25+ on the "named" brands.

To me it is very important that my children wear good shoes, flexible soles, lightweight and leather. I buy mostly at the ecco outlet and when shoes are on sale. Two pairs for each season is enough. The shoe zoo shoes we wear as slippers in the house, imo not appropriate as an outdoor shoe.

Re: flexible soled shoes really necessary for 2.5 YO?

We don't have any outlet stores anywhere near here. I pretty much have to buy online because there aren't even any retailers for most of the flexible-soled shoe manufacturers here.

The Shoe Zoo ones would last him about 2 days. He is very active and hard on his shoes. I did try the Circo ones once and it's a great idea, but IMO they weren't very well made....or more of an early walker shoe anyway. After 2-3 months they were absolutely trashed. His Stride Rites have been worn since December (well mostly just since April since he mainly wore boots in the winter) and they still look good and his younger brother will eventually be able to wear them. So I think I'd end up spending just as much, or very nearly, buying 2-3 pairs of the Circo shoes to get the same amount of use as one pair of Stride Rites. Unfortunately.

We like the sock looking ones at Target or we like Old Navy for summer shoes.

The Skidders last for a long time.

I'm a big fan of converse on my toddler. They are flexible for her and not that badly priced ($20ish).

I never have and my son will wear almost any shoe - but those soft fabric ones and the ones mentioned that have the sock - they make sense but he will not wear them. We like Vans & Circo brand and I just got a pair of stride rite as they were cheap (new sandals as he's outgrowing his) & Converse - I like vans but wanted something different.
