Re: flexible soled shoes really necessary for 2.5 YO?

I committed to flexible shoes until two. Now we still get them if we can, but for us, two was the goal.

IMO it all depends on how you want your childs feet to develope which also contributes to their backs. DD is 2.5 and still wears flexible soled shoes with the occasional shoe that is a bit stiffer. I just bought her a new pair of robeez today too because I would like her to be as close to barefoot as possible. Most of the problems today that peope have with their backs is related to their feet sooo...take what you will from that.

Personally I believe it is very important. My younger two are still in very flexible shoes or barefoot.

So, my DD is way too young for this to be an issue yet but I, personally, will not wear shoes that are stiff or confining (I jokingly refer to it a foot claustrophobia, that's what it feels like) and spend as much time barefoot as possible. I can't imagine that I would make her wear hard soled, confining shoes if I wont.

Re: flexible soled shoes really necessary for 2.5 YO?

An option that I picked up on a barefoot running blog was to use the ultra cheapie swim shoes... you know, the ones that you can roll up into a ball if you wanted to. We buy a bunch at the end of each summer for $3 or $4 a pair and wear them until they wear out. We also like the Skidders.

The Skidders last for a long time.
Can kids really wear those as shoes? They look more like slippers from the pictures. Do they wear them on bikes and at the playground too?

The bottom is very flexible...rubber. The top part is soft like a sock but not made of cotton, probably like a poly blend or something. We don't own a pair but they are pretty cool.

Yes. They have been through a lot of playground time in SW Louisiana and Mississippi and can go straight into the washing machine when they need em.

Re: flexible soled shoes really necessary for 2.5 YO?

My ds wears the Target soft-soled shoes. They're not socks, they're just like the Robee shoes I had for dd when she was younger. $15

ETA: My bad. I just realized they may not fit a 2.5 year old. Sorry.
