What is up with baby food in pouches?

So since my last baby, apparently some brands of baby food are packaging their food in pouches? Can someone tell me what the benefit of this method is? I'm assuming it's better than plastic containers (I tend to buy glass anyway).

However, from what I can tell they seemed to be priced way higher - even the same brand - earth's best in pouches was almost .40 more than earth's best in glass jars, for the same amount of food. Plus it seems like it would be more difficult to get the food out of the pouches, making it even less cost effective.

Anything I'm missing as to the benefits?

WE absolutely love the pouches. Especially the ones Happy Tot. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0030VBPWS/ref=nosim/chrisficti-20 They are so nice. They have a spout come out of them and I can just stick them inside DD mouth and she sucks the food right now. Most of the time we have little to no mess.

Never thought of that. So they're like a capri sun?

I never thought of this either. Although, right now, my LO is only 6 months, so we're not at this point yet, but something to keep in mind for later on.

I usually would pick up the pouches on sale at Babies R Us or the grocery store when on sale. My LO would love to suck the pouch independently. We also had one of the twist spoons that you can attach to the pouch and it squeezes the baby food directly on the spoon. Its pretty nifty when you're out and about.

The companies are also benefiting from it since I'm sure their shipping costs have plummeted. Glass weighs a considerable amount more and takes up more space. Not sure why they charge more for them though...

Hmmmm... that sounds really cool for when you are out. Do you have a link for one of those twist spoons... or I will be at Target tomorrow - they have them there I guess?

Yeah, I wonder if it cost more to produce the pouches (which I doubt, or why would they switch to them) or if they charge more just because it's new and different.
