Extra Wide feet - Where to buy shoes?

I had my son measured at Stride Rite and was told he needed XW shoes. I found that Stride Rite, New Balance, and Saucony all carry XW, but wondering if any other brands do as well? Or maybe XW in one brand equals just W in another? Thanks!

Oh and he wears size 5.5 in infant/toddler

Re: Extra Wide feet - Where to buy shoes?

DS2 has XW feet--we call them his "Flintstone Feet". The ones you listed are the only brands we have found that fit him well. I think he had a pair of Adidas once that worked, but it was a specific style. If we don't go to the Stride Rite outlet near us we usually go to Nordstrom and ask the salesperson to show us what comes in XW. Then we choose from there.

One way to find other brands might be to go to a website like www.endless.com. You can search shoes by size and width. The ones that come up when you put in his size might give you an idea of other brands to try.

Good luck! It's been tough finding shoes that fit DS well. There aren't a whole lot of choices. It wasn't so bad when he was little and didn't care, but now that he's 3 it's hard to explain the shoes he likes don't come in his size.

See Kai Run are really wide. They are so cute I was very sad when I got them and they literally fell of my daughter's feet.

Our DS wears a 5W in Stride Rite and we've found him lots of shoes at consignment shops. If you're looking for something affordable, I'd check there

Re: Extra Wide feet - Where to buy shoes?

Both my boys had/have XW feet with very high insteps. We have bought Stride Rites, but really I like the Umi brand. DS2 is wearing sandals right now that DS1 wore for a good 7 months and they still look great since the leather is higher quality than what Stride Rite uses.

Re: Extra Wide feet - Where to buy shoes?

Look for an Orthopedic shoe store. Maybe google it, or call a Podiatrist and ask if they know of any orthopedic shoe stores in the area.

An orthopedic shoe store will specialize in the hard to find sizes, and can also make custom adjustments to shoes for a perfect fit on difficult to fit individuals. My DH works in an excellent orthopedic shoe store in our area (Philadelphia, PA) and they carry a huge range of sizes (like quadruple E's in half sizes, etc) and do a ton of custom work. And they only carry quality brands, etc. It is definitely worth the effort to find a good orthopedic shoe store because they know their work...its a profession, not just a job. The owners in our shop are certified, etc. and have extensive knowledge of the relevant anatomy, etc., and offer a level of individual service that you would never be able to find at a chain.

For dd's feet the New Balance XW = a Stride Rite W. And even then one of my foster sons needed an XW and not all Striderite XW were created the same. I would only buy shoes you can try on until you find out exactly what shoes fit. For dd Striderite were the most consistent though See Kai Run fit once her feet thinned up a little. We were lucky and live right by the outlet for Stride Rite so I admit we didn't try too many kinds.

My nieces have always had very wide feet. My SIL has had good luck with walmart brand, LLBean, Lands End, and Stride Rite

I've only found ones that work for my son at stride rite. Fwiw, I have a pair of 5.5xw that he grew out of after less than a month that I'd be willing to sell you
