How often, on average, do babies go up a shoe size?

Just curious! Our son has pretty big feet, wide and thick. He fits into 5W stride rite shoes really well at the moment, but since he's still mostly crawling and only walking some at home, we haven't bought any more shoes for now since we rarely used them the first year!

He just turned 1 y/o a couple wks ago, so at 12 months and a size 5, about how long will it be before he's wearing a 6? A couple months? 6 months? Longer? TIA!

Its been awhile but I'd say at that age he would probably go up a full size in 6 months. It depends a lot on the fit too. A lot of places will only give a 1/2 size of growing room a that age. 5W isn't really that big for a 1 year old. Stride Rites come XW, XXW, XXXW

I think about every 3/4 months but my girl moved into size 5s at 18 months and just jumped to 6 1/2 at 20 months. I have learned my lesson about buying in advance now

Depends on growth spurts. Dd1 has gone a full year in a shoe size but has also gone up a size in 3-4 months. It is really unpredictable with her - always has been.

Dd2 isn't quite as erratic in changing sizes. She is right around the every 6 month range, give or take.

DS is little yet but so far needs new shoes every 3-4 months - he's a lot bigger than his sisters were at this age.

DS started walking at 15 months and we got him size 4.5 from Stride Rite. Two months later we were heading to the "city" and figured we'd stop by Stride Rite and check his size. He jumped to a size 6. If they feel at all snug or are not easy to slide on, we will always get him resized after this. We could not believe he grew so fast.

It really is so hard to guess. It will vary on how your own little one grows, growth spurts, etc. Ds was in 5.5W Stride rite at 14.5 months. We just went shoe shopping and I was surprised to see that at 18.5 months he was already in a 6.5W.

Re: How often, on average, do babies go up a shoe size?

The rate of increase has slowed down for us a bit now that he is three...maybe between 4 and 6 months though my husband tends to move DS up by half-sizes and checks the fit frequently. When DS was about 1-2, every 3 months was our average. DS is 3 and currently a 8 1/2 to 9 wide.

By the way, DH works in an orthopedic shoe store and knows way too much about footwear. So, he manages DS' footwear.

Hard to gauge both of my boys started walking in size 6 shoes. my daughter who formerly had the smallest feet ever just jumped to a 4 at 9 months. It seemed like it was overnight too.

Whew...my 3-year, 4-month-old DD is just now getting into a size 8. She was measured last September and was a 6.5, so we mainly got her size 7 shoes. I'd say her shoe size changes a whole size closer to the 6-12 month range. I bought her a pair of size 7 sandals early last summer and she can still wear them, although her toes are definitely closer to the edge than they were back then. I'd say that she's probably a 7.5 now.

Sounds like my DD has a small foot compared to some of yours! But I wear a 6.5, so I'm not too worried.

It really depends on the kid... DD is 4 and wears a size 9. DS is 2 and is in a 7.5 already...
