Re: DS was in the Hospital overnight!

Good luck with the allergy tests. Iknow how you feel. I have 4 boys 6 and under who are allergic to Peanuts, eggs, milk and all dairy, and squash. The pediatric allergist will do blood tests for severe allergies such as the peanuts. Other types they can do a skin prick test but not for peanuts. They will draw some blood and test it for the IEG's. The numbers they get back will tell you not only if they are allergic but how much allergic (for a better term) they are. You also will most likely recieve a prescription for an epi pen and you should have benadry on hand at all times as well. Good luck I know how scary it can be. If you need someone to talk to that has been in your shoes, please pm me. Aaron

Re: DS was in the Hospital overnight!

I'm sorry that was so scary, did you give him fish and peanuts, or was he just exposed to them because you were eating? We have a ton of allergies in our family, I went to an allergist talk at a local meeting, I'll see if I can find the handouts

Well DH & FIL were eating Fish & Chips from a local restaurant, I had just chips also, so DH thinks it could be the fish from touching the fish etc. and then touching & giving him tylenol. But then I also wondered if their grease could have been contaminated with peanut oil in some way. You never know it a long shot though.

Yikes! That's scary to think they can have a reaction to something without even eating it. Glad he's ok though.

Ya I guess some reactions can be as bad as you touching someone with the allergen on you so then transferring it to them. Or even just smell.

Re: DS was in the Hospital overnight!

Oh my I just did a Google search about Fish allergy and the Government of Canada's website has these as possibly having fish in them:

Possible sources of fish, crustaceans and shellfish

Deli meats, e.g., bologna, ham
Dips, spreads, kamaboko (imitation crab/lobster meat)
Ethnic foods, e.g., fried rice, paella, spring rolls, Nuoc Mām
Fish mixtures, e.g., surimi (used to make imitation crab/lobster meat)
Garnishes, e.g., antipasto, caponata (Sicilian relish), caviar, roe (unfertilized fish eggs)
Gelatin, marshmallows
Hot dogs
Pizza toppings
Salad dressings
Sauces, e.g., fish, marinara, steak, Worcestershire
Soups
Spreads, e.g., taramasalata (contains salted carp roe)
Sushi
Tarama (salted carp roe)
Wine

Oh my Deli meat and Hot Dogs and a bunch of other stuff I would have NEVER thought of.

Re: DS was in the Hospital overnight!

woah! i hope he's feeling better soon!! ... on another note, it could be that the fish was old too. Something to think about.

i remember when i was little, we ate a chinese rest. and had some fish and shrimp. Well, on the way home, I had a severe allergic reaction and had to be rushed the hospital. No one else had the reaction except me. Everyone else had runny noses or itchy eyes, but not severe. Anyways, it turns out that the cuttingboard they used to cut the fish and shrimp was not cleaned every time, and so the bacteria was building up and that's what caused my reaction.

So it could be that it was severe in your LO b/c he's so litte and it could be "old" stuff.
