Daycare Rates

We have DD in daycare on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8am-7pm, a really reallly long day. When we were interviewing providers my predicted hours were a little different so my quoted rates were different. The first week my provider quotes me $120 for the two days. Am I right to think that this is outrageous? I was paying $30 per day at my old daycare (although a normal 8-5 day) and understand that the extra hours deserve a little extra, but that is $60 per day! I guess I was expecting to pay $45 or $50 per day.

I don't like taking DD out of a daycare to save a few dollars but our provider is completely out of our budget. We have only been going there for a few weeks and so far DD seems to be doing well there. I am interviewing a few other providers that are a little less ($65 per week). WWYD?

Re: Daycare Rates

Not sure how cost of living compares, but that seems really high. Average rate in our area is $25-35 a day, and I would not be willing to pay more than $40 tops. Is there something that sets this daycare appart from others that might warrent the higher pay? Have you discussed the price with her? What was the quote originally for, and what hours?

Re: Daycare Rates

We originally thought we would only need afternoon and evening care when I attend class, but I accepted a TA position (woohooo!). I was going to drop her off at 3:00 or 4:00 and my husband was planning on picking her up by 7:00. She was willing to do that for $25 per day. The class I am assisting with is at 8am so my husband drops her off between 8 and 9am. Again, very different hours. I need someone dependable and with flexible hours but didn't expect to have to pay most of my income for this opportunity.

We live in Iowa, standard living costs. We live in a city so it is probably higher than a rural town. I looked it up and we are 9% lower than the national average. Most in-home daycare places on Craigslist are $25-35 per day, but many close at 5:30.

If I had ur child for that time period I would charge $50 a day. I watch children often and anything after 5:30-6 is MY family time. 7-5 is $40 a day for me.

Re: Daycare Rates

25 a day up to 10 hours daily here. If you were part time, I might raise my rates to 35 a day simply because it would be harder to fill your "off days" with another part timer.

That confirms it, we are paying more than someone in California!!! I was prepared to pay $50, to make it worth her family time. This is just crazy!

Lol! Have u told her what u are willing to pay? It's not grossly off her rate and if u love her, try and keep her. I have been watching kiddo's for a few years now and I always charge what it's worth to me. I am a sahm and my daycare babies become a part of our family and does everything with me and my boys and my dc babies parents will pay more for that.

so if u love her, offer $50. I think it's appropriate.

Re: Daycare Rates

I really feel like $45-50 is perfectly reasonable. I would talk to her and let her know that you can't afford the $60/day, is she willing to come to a compromise?

Re: Daycare Rates

My rates are $35/day based on a 10 hour day. Anything over that is $5/hr
