How long to see effects of new formula?

DS (5 weeks on Friday) has become super fussy over the last 2-2.5 weeks. I suspect reflux for many a symptoms he's showing. We had him on Gerber Gentle powder, switched as of yesterday to Nutramigen per doctor's recommendation.

How long should I "wait" to see if this new formula is having any positive effect? So far the feedings have still been quite a nightmare - Doc said to try it 1-2 weeks, but I feel like that's too long? He's such a screamer and hard to handle, not sleeping well at all due to constant pain and spitting up. If I don't see any changes by Friday should I call back? Or wait until Monday?

Next step will be a Pedi GI specialist, though I sorta wished she had just written a Rx for Zantac to try - mother's instinct

Re: How long to see effects of new formula?

First let me say congratulations!

I had a 31 weeker with similar issues. I hated the smell of nutramigen. That didn't stay down either. I would call on Friday, if you think he's not getting enough to eat. Waiting over the weekend is just hard and stress that you don't need. For my DD Zantac didn't work, we ended up doing all kinds of things from CAT SCANS to see if there was anything structural, ultrasounds, we went to a PED GI at Hopkins and he put us on EryPed (Erythromycin). Apparently, it helps them push the food through their system in small doses. We tried EVERYTHING! It drove us crazy! I wouldn't sleep, she couldn't sleep, we were all a mess.

Then out of the blue, She just stopped. Don't know what happened, but she must have just grown out of it. She would be have been the same age as your little one adjusted. I hope you get an answer ASAP.

That's the hardest!

I feel your pain!

Thanks for your response It does smell horrendous. It can't possibly taste good but (Crosses Fingers) he's taken it without a complaint so far!

wow, I feel for your pain! Do you mean she was 5 weeks when she stopped? That's SO lucky.. I have this fear he will continue for 6 months. That's why I'm hoping we solve it re: formula or zantac...

Re: How long to see effects of new formula?

Call and get on the Zantac and make a big stink.

For us we noticed right away - within a day or so so I tried many formulas but never did more than a day. We found similac sensitive liquid the "best" - the liquid doesn't have to be mixed as much so it is less air/gas. I mixed that liquid with their rice starch formula and that seemed to be the winning combination for us.

Also, for the meantime, you may want to let him nap (not overnight) near you in a bouncy seat vs. laying flat. My son far preferred it and he's a big crib boy. I had no issue transitioning him when he outgrew it. If I was buying a new one, I'd get one with a 5 part harness vs. the lap if possible.

Good luck... hope you find some relief.

Re: How long to see effects of new formula?

Thanks, all .... I did follow up with a phone call today (wanted to whine before the long holiday weekend). She is calling Zantac into our pharmacy. She recommends giving the Nutramigen a full week before starting the Zantac. I'll give him a couple more days but if nothings improved by Monday I'm starting him on it.. At least DH and I can be zombies over the weekend with less of an effect on our lives.

Re: How long to see effects of new formula?

I'd try the Zantac first if it is reflux but its a personal choice. If she doesn't adjust to the formula in a day or two, try it and then try the Zantac - Zantac works pretty quickly and is not a medication that needs to build up in the system so you also know pretty quickly if its working. Good like giving it to her - getting the syringe is a fine art.

After a horrendous feeding tonight, I started him on the Zantac.

Re: How long to see effects of new formula?

We measure out my son's reflux meds in a syringe and then just take a nipple of a bottle and put it in that and let him suck it out. He does not like having it just squirted into this mouth.

Re: How long to see effects of new formula?

The problem with putting it in the bottle is if they don't drink the entire bottle, then what. They also say to wait a little while if you can (you can't always) before feeding/do in-between feedings for the best effect. Squirt on the side of the mouth in the cheek if you can. After a while our son got used to it and took it no problem (now he fights us on medications).

Hmm yeah our issue right now is it tastes TERRIBLE and when we give it to him separately he spits it out. every time. Right now we're giving him 5-10 seconds on the bottle, then quickly pulling it out and swapping it for the syringe and giving him the bottle back quick LOL
