Does your older dog sleep ALL the time(age 9)?

Doggie is now nine, has had noticeable ageing last year or so. He got senior blood work done at the vet this summer and vet was suprised how "young" his numbers came back(liver, blood etc). Was diagnosed and on medicine for athiritis, he's a biggish dog(76lbs), mix of rott/spaniel/german shepard from the pound.

Anyway, I feel like he sleeps all the time! Like if the kids and I weren't always in and out and up to stuff he would probably just lay and sleep ALL day. He'll get up to go pee etc, food, when it's our dinnertime(loves to scavenge) and once in a while to go outside with us for a quick walk when it's not so hot.

Is this normal? I know he's old etc but I feel all he does is sleep all day?

yes we have a 13 year old (almost 14) greyhound and she sleeps pretty much constantly. She is some arthritis meds and some things for incontinence, but is otherwise healthy and happy. She just needs lots of beauty rest

Yep!! He's 11, and a Chihuahua, so relatively middle aged. I never see him unless he has to pee.

Re: Does your older dog sleep ALL the time(age 9)?

Dogs are alot like people. When they are babies they sleep tons and when they get old they sleep tons.
We have a 16 year old dachshund who I call my little old lady.. she will sleep all night long than while I am at work she sleeps most of the time I'm away (says my hubby).
Sassy had to have surgery about 8 months ago to remove an oral tumor on her lip and she had a full work up done at that time and he said she's in fantastic shape for her age but, she does have a little heart murmur but, like he said.. she's old its to be expected.
She likes to follow me around when I'm home so we have beds for her literally in every room (except the bathroom of course). Since her skin is thinner and she's alot more bony than she used to be (we have a hard time keeping weight on her but, she's doing better with that) we want to make sure she's comfortable and not laying directly on the floor.

Yup. Old girl is 13. She's poodle and she sleeps all day. Goes out to potty, eats, and sleeps on our bed all day otherwise. She can't see or hear so well anymore but otherwise seems to be in fine health. She's just old.

Phew, I was starting to feel worried even though vet has checked him out as ok. I suppose it's just a transition year where I need to get used to him as an "old dog". So sad when you think what a crazy hyper puppy he used to be , well as long as he's ok and probably happy to sleep and be lazy!

Re: Does your older dog sleep ALL the time(age 9)?

My 13 year old beagle, Ginger, passed away in July. She was a pretty lazy dog overall, but the last few years she definitely slept most of the day. Even more than before!

She was very very healthy until the last year (kidney problems), so try not to worry too much. I know how hard it is to watch them age, but if he's happy and healthy and eating well, he's probably just settling into the next (lazy!) stage of life.

2,014 items in 2014?

Re: Does your older dog sleep ALL the time(age 9)?

We have a 85lb 10 year old black lab. He's actually quite active for his age, but I'm pretty sure he's an exception. My parents senior dog sleeps all day and so do my IL's.

Our guy still flies off the dock up north after sticks, chasing sticks that the girls throw all day and does a 2 mile walk with me almost every night!
