Moms with Weight Issues in PG?

Sorry to be a post whore these days.

Do any other Mommas have weight issues in PG? I have PCOS and after they take me off Metformin, I gain so bad due to the insulin resistance and lower functioning thyroid. This time I am going to an endocrinologist and she is keeping me on Metformin for the entire PG - HOORAY! Plus, she is treating my thyroid issues. We are hoping this combination will stop the GD I get and the weight gain.

I still had 9 pounds to go to be back to my pre-PG weight from DS2 (lost DS1s weight and then some 3 months PP with him). I got PG with DS3 only 6 months PP and was still 20lbs from my pre-DS2 weight.

I was told that I do not have to increase my diet until I am over 12 weeks and then by only 300 calories per day. Is anyone else going to carefully watch their diet and keep weight gain to the bear minimum? I normally gain 50-60 pounds per pregnancy. I am hoping to gain no moer than 25-30 this time.

Re: Moms with Weight Issues in PG?

I would like to keep my weight gain lower. I gained about 40 with DS (but he was 10+lb at birth). I lost it all pretty quickly, but was overweight to begin with. I would like to keep it around 20-25 this time if I can. I think being pregnant in winter/spring will help since I will be able to walk outside the entire time. Being hugely pregnant in the summer just sapped any type of energy out of me and I did not exercise at all the last few months, besides just floating around in the pool.

Re: Moms with Weight Issues in PG?

I got PG with DS2 during the best time, but just had knee surgery that left me (along with the initial injury) disabled. I gained 60 pounds with him. I lost 30 within 2 weeks of delivery but gained it all back when eating too much while nursing. Learned that the hard way! Went on WW for nursing moms and lost 40 pounds and got knocked up again...LOL!

Gained 50 pounds with DS3. I was still having leg issues and he was a late summer baby, so walking was hard. Took forever to lose the weight with him as he was dairy allergic, so WW was nearly impossible. I tried to eat enough to keep my supply while not gaining weight. I managed to sit at 168 pounds until he was done nursing at 11 months old. After I went back on WW on and off and lost all but 9 pounds before getting PG again.

I am still disabled, but able to walk once per day. I do it rain/shine/snow so that will help. I am watching what I eat for the most part. I have cheated a few times, but make up for it after. I am trying to prepare for all the odd things I will crave as usual by having sugar free, fat free, and dairy free or at least friendly in the house at all times. I am eating fruit and veggies - free on WW - when I am snacky. I do air popped popcorn with zero calorie butter spray and 0 calorie white cheddar shake on it. It helps!

I have been so craving naughty foods like candy, cake, ice cream, pizza, cheese, and so on. Those will make me gain 10 pounds in a week if I eat them...LOL!

Re: Moms with Weight Issues in PG?

I'm hypothyroid and was diagnosed after DS1 was born July 2008. My weight has yo-yo'd between 175 and 199, I'm 29 weeks today and have gained a total of 18lb this pregnancy, my doc told me the other day I could gain another 5-10lb before DS2 gets here. I was shocked. With my first pregnancy I gained 30lb and could never quite shake it off, so this time I'm trying to be really careful and I started exercising just a few weeks ago when I started having the time and energy. I wish I knew more I could do, I'm even switching most of my diet over to Organic or just all around healthier foods.

I was very careful with DD and still gained 40lbs, I just think it's my body. I didn't eat a lot of junk (with the boys I ate blizzards all.the.time) and I didn't drink soda.

I am a semi-vegetarian this time around (I don't cook meat but will eat it) so I am wondering how that will affect the weight gain. Ugh, this reminds me I NEED to go to the store. We literally have no food, blah!

Have they put you on meds to help your thyroid? My GP was a moron and did not believe me that your TSH has to be below 2 and ideally around 1. Mine as above that even on meds. I got referred to an endocrinologist at my request and it was the smartest thing I could do! My levels were 1.54 and she still upped me by half a tab per week to be safe.

I am sticking to WW until into my 2nd trimester and then only adding the recommended 300 calories per day. I do a ton of fruit and veggies. With veggies I use Walden Farms 0 calorie dressing. It is really yummy! Everything I eat is low carb, sugar free, fat free, and higher in protein. If I am feeling sncky - I eat frozen fruit as it is more "treat-like" yet no points/very low calorie.

Yeah - I too do not drink soda, eat a ton of junk, etc. I was very careful last time and still gained 50 with DS3. It was the insulin resistance for me and even women with no PCOS tend to be insulin resistant during PG, I was worse due to the PCOS. I tend to gain a lot of water weight with each baby. While it is awful - at least that does away fast after delivery. I lost 30 pounds within days after having DS2. Wish I had not pigged out while nursing and gain it all back!

I am 147 lbs now and was 152 pounds when I got my BFP. I am hoping to stay 145-147 until I start to show - 16-ish weeks. I walk 3 miles per day, too. Veggies are great for weight control. They are so low in calories that they are considered free food for WW. When I get the munchies are feel like I cheated, I do all veggies for snacks and dinner...LOL!

I was on 88mcg Levothyroxine (yes the generic, no, no one will switch me to synthroid because I'm "doing good" I've asked...repeatedly) and since getting pregnant I've had my thyroid checked two times once in the 1st TM, once in 2TM the first one they said I was too close to hyper so they changed me to 75mcg and this last check I took my pill at 4AM had my blood drawn at 9AM and I was whatever they consider normal. My OBGYN is the one who's ordered the last 2 tests and they said they'd check me again in a few weeks to make sure I was still doing good. But I always thought I'd have to go UP on my meds not down while I was pregnant.

I feel like I'm going to enough specialists now, I may add in an endocrinologist after the baby's here because after DS1 was born I went hyperthyroid until apparently it burnt itself out, then they put me on meds. I was sad...I needed that boost in weightloss

LOL! I hear ya on the specialist front! I also was finding it too hard to lose weight after I stopped nursing. I went from feeling great and losing to being so tired and not able to lose a pound in about 2 weeks. My thyroid was a bit enlarged, as well during that appointment. I used to have a hyperthyroid and was very thin, then it went bye bye. I miss it! To be able to eat what I want and still lose weight was awesome! Ugh!

I have to have my blood drawn every 4 weeks, which is such my favorite thing - NOT! LOL!I will have to check out that book!

Re: Moms with Weight Issues in PG?

I have PCOS and insulin resistance and I refused to go off my Metformin after I went off my Metformin with my last pregnancy and four days later, lost the baby.

I'm hoping to gain 0-12 pounds this pregnancy and so far I'm at 0 but I'm only 6 weeks so I have a long way to go.
