Question Breastfeeding my 6 month old while pregnant?????

So the hubby and I want to get pregnant again when our little one is 6-7months old BUT I am worried that a pregnancy will make my milk less nutritious for my current baby and I am planning on breastfeeding until at least 12 months? He is my priority right now, so If my milk will be negatively effected we will just wait.

I did breastfeed my first daughter while pregnant with my second but she was 12 months old when I got pregnant so I wasn't that worried.

Pregnancy causes a hormonal reaction most of the time that is unavoidable and causes your milk supply to significantly decrease or for most women dry up completely. Usually starting at the second trimester-20 weeks. Some women can maintain the breastfeeding relationship and keep milk throughout the pregnancy. But it doesn't work on supply/demand anymore (nursing more wont make it increase) Then at the end of the pregnancy it changes over to colostrum. So you would probably find yourself needing to supplement with donor milk or formula until he is 12 months. I recommend Kellymom.com if you want more information: http://kellymom.com/nursingtwo/faq/index.html

Milk changes in composition and taste almost immediately at conception. It becomes saltier. Some babies don't like it and wean because of taste before the volume decreases.

If I had a young nursling (under a year), I wouldn't intentionally get pregnant.

Re: Breastfeeding my 6 month old while pregnant?????

My milk supply dramatically dropped once I was pregnant. DS was over 18 months but still nursed a lot. My supply was probably cut in half by 16 weeks or so and went to almost nothing in later months. My milk came in the day my baby was born though (which leads me to believe it was never totally gone) and I tandem nursed for 9 months. How was your supply during your last pregnancy? Sad to say, but it really is risking your supply to get pregnant. I do NOT say this from a place of judgement, only from a place of having been there. If you want to EBF your baby till a year, you may have to wait to TTC.

Re: Breastfeeding my 6 month old while pregnant?????

I agree with the other posters. In addition, nursing during pregnancy is often a lot more painful for mom, or at least irritating. I waited to TTC until I had hit my goal age for nursing because I did not want to risk earlier weaning due to pregnancy. I went on to nurse through pregnancy, but my LO was much older and I would have been fine with it at that point if she had weaned. If it is important to you to nurse until 12 months, I would wait until then, or at least close to then, to TTC.

My supply almost completely dried out once I got pregnant while breast feeding. I had a very hard time weaning. My older one who was 4 months at that time still nursed before each nap and at night up till my 7th month. I dread to think back how I felt... It took every bit of energy i had.
If it were up to me I wouldn't do It!!
