Ah the ole wooden spoon. My mom broke many on my backside too! We never did soap. I won't use it on my kiddo's. Not sure yet what i will do but something less physical.

Re: Washing mouth out with soap

I don't think I could bring myself to put soap in my kids' mouth, as it is poisonous. We don't have a problem with bad words in the house, although we occasionally do with lying, but we as of yet haven't come up with a discipline that works for that.

I know I could not put soap in my kids mouth! I never had that as a child. We did get spanked though and I know that never "fixed" anything.

My Dh and I do have pretty foul mouths so we're working on it. Maybe a "swear jar" for just us would work too. Now that the baby isn't really a baby anymore she is picking things up fast!

As for lying, my kids are soooo bad at it, all I have to do is raise my eyebrows, and they cave..... EVERY time! LOL

Re: Washing mouth out with soap

I can't seem to edit, so....

We couldn't use soap for Evan if we wanted to - when he was a baby (until 2 or so) we had to fight to keep the soap OUT of his mouth ---- seriously, the bar of ivory in the tub would ALWAYS have teeth marks in it!

My mil told me to use hot sauce on fs' fingers so he'd stop sucking or chewing on them - could you IMAGINE forgetting it was there??? OW OW OW! Not to mention that he's a FOSTER child... God love her, I know she means well, but.... ugh!

My 7yo is learning a SLEW of new words at school this year, and as used a few of the *funner* ones at home to show off for his brothers. By funner, I mean the ones that make Mama's face turn purple and the glass in her hand drop.....

Fortunately, my kiddos are in such a competition to make the other look bad, that my 5yo will come screaming into the house to tell me if the 7yo has said something colourful again --- and definitely vice versa.

Now that we have a 4yo fs who could make a sailor blush (no joke), the 5 and 7yo have decided that they don't want to stand in the corner like N does when he swears, so it's tapered off a lot lately! lol

Now if anyone has suggestions on tattling??!?!?!!?! We've done the "Are you telling me INFORMATION or are you trying to get your brother in TROUBLE?" but it's not working....

Re: Washing mouth out with soap

The thing that works best in our household are sentences. I think another poster said something about making her kids write as well. We always do a positive spin on the sentence though, as I feel everyone should always try to have a positive perspective. So rather than..I will not swear...I will use appropriate language....or something like that. Works pretty good.

As far as tattling goes...man, just not sure about that one. Good luck!

Hi Dixie!!

This is what I do also just a little and make them swish with it. So far only the oldest has had to do it and he will never again!
