Yet again another car seat ?

Ok, we have plenty of time to really debate this but we're wanting to do some research and get all our ducks lined up so to speak.

We know when the new baby (due in Aug) comes she'll use dd's old infant seat. When she outgrows the infant seat (we're guessing around 5-6 months which is when dd started disliking it (but hadn't outgrown it)) we'll move her into dd's roundabout that she's in now.

Which means dd will need a new car seat. We want to get a forward facing only car seat with a 5 pt harness but will convert to a booster seat so it will be the last car seat she should need. When we travel we do long trips so it needs to be pretty cushy and comfy to ride in for awhile. We were looking at babies r us the other day and saw the Cosco Alpha Elite Apex and she seemed pretty comfy in it. Is this a decent seat? We don't want to spend britax money if there is a good seat out there cheaper (we don't really have that kind of money anymore) but if we have to I suppose we will figure something out.

Thanks in advance!

Oh I should add dd is a little thing - 25th percentile for height and weight. So she will probably never out grow height restrictions on a carseat. She's almost 2 1/2 and weighs 25 lbs.

Re: Yet again another car seat ?

The Apex only works if you have a headrest on the back of the seat of your car. On its own the headrest does nothing.

We were in a similar dillemma and ended up getting the Sunshine Kids Radian. It harnesses your child up to 65 pounds, but does not turn into a booster afterwards. We spent $200 and are very happy with it. The straps are the same height as the Marathon, but many kids can be in it longer because it sits up so straight. If your daughter is on the small side of things, it is feasible that your car seat will expire (5 years?) before she outgrows it.

Re: Yet again another car seat ?

There are only two car seats on the market that are good harness/booster combos. The rest all have various flaws.

The Apex is one of the good ones. It has about a zillion names but it should look like this (colors vary) http://www.specialtybaby.com/coalelapboca.html

It is a great harness for a smaller child and then makes a good booster afterwards.

The ONLY thing that you need to know is this car seat CANNOT be used unless you have an expendable headrest behind this car seat.

We have a mini van so we have the headrest to work with. We will definitely keep the apex on our list. We won't actually buy the seat until we're close to needing it in case something better comes out or something like that.

Re: Yet again another car seat ?

Just a thought, but at only 25lbs she could still be rear facing for quite some time. Rear facing is much safer than forward facing!
