help me understand: diapers with holes

so i bought some BGES and dreameze fitteds, none had holes, all look nice, and i know those are notorious for getting holes but anyways i have washed them 4 times since i got them and now they have at lease 4 holes in each.....has anyone notices what causes this? like is it worse with top loaders or worse if you use the dryer....who has never got holes in these diapers? please tell me how the heck you take care of them!!! i hate the holes, especially in the small dreamezes because she will outgrow them so quick and the freaking resell is crap now that i got holes after 4 washes.... i was planning on being able to sell her small diapers to fund mediums but now they are all holey after 4 freaking washes

Re: help me understand: diapers with holes

i never had a problem with holes. haven't tried the BGE yet but I have used Dream Eze fitteds and they all look new. I have smalls up for sale that I used for 6 weeks washing every other day and they look new. when my first daughter was in larges (4 years ago) I used Dream Eze fitteds and they had really heavy use on top of me buying them used and never a problem with them looking worn.

i have a top loader, soft water and dry them on the line then fluff in the dryer.

I think it's just the nature of cotton. Someone compared it once to washing a t-shirt as much as our diapers and that made total since. The t-shirt would get holes over time.

Re: help me understand: diapers with holes

I don't have any Dream-Eze but our BGE are in perfect condition still. I got one last month in the seconds sale and besides some pills on the stretchy tabs they all look just like the new one. I have a TL, use Tide, sometimes bleach, usually put them in the dryer (used to line dry them every other wash) so I do not baby them.

ETA: I used to wash daily until DD was about 6 months and now I wash every 2-3 days.

I think it's just the nature of the fabric, unfortunately. I have 24 and 3 of them have holes. I have a front loader and use Tide. I line dry sometimes and machine dry other times.

I also have a dozen Thirsties hemp prefolds and some of them have tiny holes too. I did buy my Elementals new so I am going to exchange the holey ones before my warranty is up.

Re: help me understand: diapers with holes

I agree w/pp's that cotton wears out, it is the nature of the fabric.

However, I do think that some top loaders are a lot rougher on clothes. I have both an old school top loader and a front loader, and I always line dry my covers and pail liners. After I started using the top loader, I had several covers and 2 pail liners get tear in the PUL. I am positive it if from the washer, b/c I had been using a FL up until that point and nothing got holes in it. I wash my covers separately in my FL, and wash the prefolds in the top loader. It's a pain, but I don't like my covers getting eaten.

sitting wet in the pail can cause cotton rot...

rockin' a soak with RNG is too rough for organic cotton IMHO

if you use a wet pail... again, possibly cotton rot

washign on hot = rough on organic cotton

top-loader machine = harder on the fabrics

I'm not saying all of this is what you do, just what I understand to be problems with organic cotton. I would say if you bought them used that it's probably not your 6 weeks of use that caused the holes, but all the use before then... a bummer though, because I love my DE fitteds, and they were discontinued
