Talk to me about bleach

I am thinking it might be time to give my diapers a really good wash aka bleach.

So talk to me - what can be bleached and what can't be bleached? What is your wash process with it? Do you start with already clean diapers?

And anything else I am forgetting.

Thanks so much mamas!

I bleached my BG 4.0 pockets and mf inserts. Put 1/4 cup bleach in the bleach dispenser and ran a normal wash. (prewash, warm/cold cycle, extra rinse, on heavy duty cycle) it added the bleach whenever was normal for the cycle.

ETA: oh and they were dirty when I washed with bleach.

Re: Talk to me about bleach

Yeah. I found out that bleach is not to be as feared as I thought. (Funny because there is a clorox advertisment right now to the right...lol.)
I actually use a little in every wash now, it helps because we have hard water (really hard), and there is not a lot that I have found to give us a hand.
When I strip, I use 1/4 c. with everything. Never hurt a thing, and my inserts/pfs came out beautiful.

What about bamboo/hemp? Unbleached prefolds?

I've bleached bamboo and hemp too.... no problems so far! Unbleached pfs just get a little less "tan" colored over time.

Re: Talk to me about bleach

I've started using bleach every couple washes bc we were having stink issues from overnight diaps..Now everything comes out smelling clean I just pour a little in with a normal wash cycle on dirty diaps.

Thanks! I think they just need a little pick me up! And it doesn't affect the PUL covers at all? (the colors?)

Re: Talk to me about bleach

I just bleached every single insert I have. I used like 2c of bleach(I am an insert hoarder) added once the machine was full of water. I let it agitate for a minute and then turn the machine off to let them soak for 30 minutes. I have never had such clean inserts. I have bamboo and microfiber inserts. For the pocket shells, I used 1/4c in the wash cycle on clean diapers. They smell great and no stinkies when DS pees. Woot! We had the nasty barnyard smell. Barf.

Re: Talk to me about bleach

I've never had PUL colors be effected by bleach. Even Cottonbabies says you can use 1/4-1/2 cup bleach once a month. I only use that much if my kids have been sick or something. I prefer to use about a tbsp in each wash instead (in my prewash actually). We have hard well water and children who share diapers, so it is a preventive thing for us. I used to be paranoid about ruining diapers so I'd wash only with CD approved detergents, no bleach and dried on low. My diapers stunk and were worn out looking quickly. Now I use Tide, bleach and dry them on medium or hot and they look and smell fabulous

Thanks for posting this question...I'm looking to do the same thing! Dumb question here...but everyone is talking about regular 'ol bleach (like Chlorox?) not the "safe" non-chlorine kind, right?
