If you can't breastfeed due to medical issues, why is it that you can get pregnant safely?

I have a fever, so if this comes off as rude, I honestly don't mean to be. I am just curious.

I'm pretty sure the op was not trying to get pregnant. Actually, she stated several times she is on birth control and if she is pregnant it is a big surprise.

Re: No longer nursing.....

OK, guess what? My cycle is Baaaaaack!
First thing, this morning so no need to call my ob/gyn in the morning!

As for those wondering about my medical reason for weaning: I have a TON of food allergies. This is why it took so long to conceive my son, to begin with... I went undiagnosed for YEARS! Anyway, I have a hard time gaining/maintaining a healthy weight while minding my allergies. I lost so much weight that the doctors (my primary, ob/gyn, and the pediatrician) were all concerned about my health and asked me to wean. DS was full-term (actually 4 days overdue) and over 21lbs at 6 months so they were fully confident in my son's health. So reluctantly, and with dh also concerned about my health and pushing me, I conceeded. DS is still healthy and growing like a weed and I'm currently maintaining a much more appropriate weight and don't look quite so much like a scarecrow, anymore.

Thanks for answering, I guess it's one of my biggest bf fears to be told I can't anymore. I'm going through a mess pp and I'm constantly worried about it.

No problem. I was very surprised to discover that food allergies could affect fertility. Apparently, ramping up your immune system (in my case, by unknowingly eating foods I am allergic to) can cause implantation problems. Who knew?! Once I found out I HAVE food allergies and drastically changed the foods I eat, I was pregnant within a month! Unfortunately, most foods high in calories are the foods I cannot have. I am allergic to dairy, wheat, eggs ,soy, chicken, potatoes, tomatoes, chocolate, strawberries, pineapple.... and a few others I'm not remembering off the top of my head. I'm on a whole foods diet, now in order to control the ingredients because finding foods without soy hidden in them is "mission impossible." I took food-based vitamins to make sure ds was getting everything he needs, nutrition-wise but maintaining my weight with his ever-growing appetite was a losing battle. My pre-preg weight was 115 and I'm 5'5". I was down to 105 when I weaned DS. Now I'm back up to around 115.

Maybe you were too thin to have your AF until you got back up to 115? Women with very low body fat can have amenorrhea (no AF while not pg) sometimes. Not that this has ever been a problem for me personally (I have the opposite weight concern!)
Well, glad you got it back now so you feel back to normal. Do you wish it's gone yet?

Ugh! YES! I forgot how icky and sluggish I always feel when dealing with this time of month. My lower back is killing me and I'm just not feeling good at all. And it's so much heavier than I remember. I actually soaked through an overnight in the middle of the night and again by the time we got up this morning! I sure hope it dials down a notch soon bc I'm not used to THIS at all. Before ds, an Always extra long dri-liner 3x times a day would cover me on my heaviest days.
Oh, well.... just another fact of life, I suppose.
At least I know ds wasn't my last egg!
Hoping to convince hubby (after hunting season is over) that we need a sibling for ds. Ideally, I'd like to get preg sometime between December and March. That way, I can avoid being unbearably far along in the really hot months of summer.
Then again..... I'll graciously accept whatever God blesses us with, on HIS timeline!

Re: No longer nursing.....

I've actually heard about food allergies causing infertility but never met anyone that figured out that was what their problem was. I'm glad you figured it out and are able to manage it.

Yep. That's me! Actually, one of my closest friends is an RN and she's the one who suggested getting tested for allergies. Hubby had asked me to focus on my other health concerns rather than conception because I would get so frustated and depressed that I wasn't getting pregnant.

For 15+ years, I had been dealing with what I though was acne but it looked more rash-like and would itch and burn like a sunburn. This rash would start on my face but when it was real bad, it would extend down my neck, chest, top of my arms and up into my scalp. I was also getting persistent constant headaches and didn't realize having a bowel movement at every potty-time wasn't normal.

I had no idea that any or all of this could be linked to me not getting pregnant.

Over the years, I went to mutiple doctors, dermatologists, and fertility specialists and seemed to hit a roadblock every time. Dermatologists wanted to prescribe Accutane but I refused because I don't like the risks associated with the drug and they couldn't explain the itchiness associated with my "acne." The Endocronologists wanted to progress to trying insemination which hubby is completely against and refused to do simply because he wanted to allow God to choose whether we should become parents.
After finally breaking down on my hands and knees crying and praying to God, I realized all my prayers before had been selfish. My prayer that day was simple: "Please help me God. I know your word says you'll never give me anything more than I can bear. Please help me to bear it if your answer is no. I don't know if I can get through that alone. Please help me through this."

The next day, my friend was over visiting and we discussed the difficulty I was having accepting what seemed like a "no." We also discussed that my hubby wanted me to start focusing on my health (not just fertility) and start the whole process again to find answers.... I had been down this road and given up many times. She looked right at me and said, "It doesn't look like acne. Of all the doctors you've been to, have you seen an allergist? It's at least a place to start that you haven't tried before. And I can recommend a good dr near us because my brother saw him a couple years ago."

I set up the consultation and had testing done. I was allergic to nearly everything they tested me for so my session had to be split into 2 visits. But I had SOMETHING. I drastically changed my eating habits and did TONS of research to learn how to read and understand the ingredient labels on food at the grocery store. (You'd be amazed at how many different words can mean the same ingredient.)
One month later, I was pregnant!

Through learning about my allergies, I no longer have the itchy sunburn-like rash, no longer have the migrain-like headaches, and no longer have a bowel movement every time I go to the bathroom. I know which foods trigger what reactions so if I experience a reaction, I know which food to look for hidden in the ingredient labels.

AMAZING, how God puts certain people in your life just when you need them most!
And how one prayer, the right prayer, can change your world!

Re: No longer nursing.....

My best friend has severe food allergies that were only recently diagnosed and has trouble weighing over 112 at 5'6" (part of me hated her in high school ). She had fertility issues until she was able to gain some weight. I'm sorry you had to wean your DS. Sounds like you did a great job plumping him up on your milk and you should be proud of that. Glad AF is back and you know what's going on. I hope your body will stay balanced and you'll conceive easily when the time comes. Come join us in the TTC area anytime! Just be warned that you will be begged to pee on a stick anytime you even think you could possibly be pregnant.
