Lettuce - how to keep it fresh?
Pretty much exactly what the title says - what type of lettuce do you buy (bag or by the head) and how do you keep it fresh for longer than 2 or 3 days?

Re: Lettuce - how to keep it fresh?
with iceberg lettuce (which we only use for tacos
), I wrap it in paper towel and put it in a gallon size ziploc. It lasts for at LEAST a week if not longer With the other lettuces, I usually put them with a paper towel too, and move around every few days.

Re: Lettuce - how to keep it fresh?
I have a crisper the size of a head of lettuce that I keep it in. Stays good for about a week. I was thinking about trying this too. Pretty neat idea.

Re: Lettuce - how to keep it fresh?
I either buy the organic mix in the plastic tub type thing - which keeps quite a while - or will buy a head of romaine, wash it and dry it, tear it up, and put it in a ziploc.

Re: Lettuce - how to keep it fresh?
There is a butter lettuce you can buy with the root on, I think the brand is called living lettuce. If you only break off what you need and keep the rest on the root it will last forever. It also taste great.

Re: Lettuce - how to keep it fresh?
Thanks for the advice. I've washed and chopped up a head of romaine and put it in a baggie with a paper towel, hopefully it will last more than a couple days (I always had problems with the bag mix going bad really fast).

Re: Lettuce - how to keep it fresh?
I do this and make sure you squeeze out as much air as possible each time you open and close the bag. It lasts 2 weeks like that in my crisper drawer.
