Can people understand your 3-year-old?

My 3-year-old was a bit of a late talker. She was super early with motor skills, but behind on verbal.

My mom pointed out to me this week though that no one can understand her. I struggle to understand new things she says, but for the most part I am used to hearing her way of talking. None of my friends can understand her either.

It's never worried me before because I've never thought much of it. I just figured toddlers are hard to understand. But at her birthday party this week I realized that I could understand all of her peers of the same age, but none of the other adults could understand her.

It still doesn't really upset me or anything, I just want to make sure I get her help if it seems warranted.

Would this worry anyone else?

At three, I would have her evaluated. Most people understand my three year old, unless she's playing really shy and talking really really quietly. Granted, she's closer to 4, but she's been quite clear for a while.

I would say get her speech AND her hearing tested. You should be able to understand 50-75% of what a 3 year old says. She may have fluid in her ears that is causing her to hear things distorted, so she say's them that way. In general, I'm in favor of evaluations for any concerns, though. It doesn't really hurt, and speech therapy won't hurt her either.

I agree; have her evaluated for speech therapy. At age 3, your local school district will evaluate her for free and provide free therapy if she qualifies. Call their office of special services to request an evaluation.

People have been able to understand my DD since before she was 2 and she will bs 3 this Dec. I would get her evaluated too just for good measure.

Sent from my iPhone...excuse any autocorrect mishaps!

People understand my 3 year old better than my 6 year old. Both were late talkers, but ds has/has had a very severe speech delay. T- just has about a 6-8 month global delay, but nothing really severe.

no, only dh and I usually understand our 3 yr old. He is in early intervention program through our public school system. We have had a great experience with the program so far.

Re: Can people understand your 3-year-old?

MY DS is almost 4. I can understand what he says, but other people can only understand about half of it. We had a speech evaluation and he didn't qualify for help.

It can't hurt to have her evaluated, it only takes a couple of hours. But I wouldn't stress much over it. The range of normal speech development is very large at 3.

My 3 year old is about 50-70% intelligible to people. I understand him completely...but I'm biased since I'm a speech-language therapist. lol. Most of his articulation errors are later developing sounds like s-blends, l-blends, v, sh, ch. I'd say, if you're concerned, don't hesitate to have your child evaluated.
