Re: I feel like I'm the bane for starting solids at 5 1/2 months

Ya I really don't think anything magical is going to happen in the next two weeks to make your baby "ready". I am seriously the only one I know IRL that doesn't start at 4mo. That is when pediatricians give the go ahead around here and the parents do it cause it's the "next step". I wait till 6 or 7 months but I really don't think a little avocado at 5.5mo is going to hurt anything.
You're reading your baby's cues, gosh she's already crawling. I think she'll be just fine.

Re: I feel like I'm the bane for starting solids at 5 1/2 months

I would do the same as you, OP.

My oldest became interested in food very early, around 4 months. It got to where I could no longer hold him and eat because he very obviously wanted what I had. So, at 5ish months when he could sit unassisted and feed himself, I let him have food. He still nursed until he was 3. He still loves food today, at almost 5, and he is a more healthful and varied eater than most adults.

I don't think starting solids before 6 did him, or my supply, any harm at all.

Re: I feel like I'm the bane for starting solids at 5 1/2 months

Our DS is 5.5 months and we give him bits of avocado mixed with breastmilk on and off, mostly just because he REALLY loves it. He holds the spoon and shovels it into his mouth. He still BFs well, so we aren't jumping from one boat to teh other, but I think that you know your kid and you will do what is best for him/her. Numbers are numbers -- each kid is different. Trust yourself!

I say that you know your child and your child's needs better than anyone else.

5.5 months is not at all 'bad'. I don't think that you and your child would benefit from withholding food that he desires for 2 weeks. I think timelines like those are somewhat silly. Yes, I think there is a reality to being 'too early', but 5.5 months hardly qualifies.
