Re: WWYD? Maternity leave..

That's hard. Will your class have the same sub the whole time your gone? Because if that's the case I wouldn't worry so much. Could you conpromise with yourself and say 9 weeks? Tough decision

I'd take 12 weeks and I would communicate that as soon as possible.

Re: WWYD? Maternity leave..

I only was able to take 6 weeks with my oldest & 5 weeks with my youngest. A long as you have a normal birthing experience & the baby has no issues with BF & is healthy, I think 6 weeks is plenty. And dad stays home with the kids? Even better!

I guess I can't imagine having the possibility of 3 months off, so I might be crazy. It just seems so unnecessarily long to me(unless you or the baby have problems).

So I would plan for 6 myself. 12 worst case.

Agreed. I'm a pragmatist. I'd plan on the 6 wks...the baby will have a parent at home w/ her in any case. And TBH, though I love DP, I cannot imagine being home w/ her FT for three months (like you would be w/ DH); we'd kill each other .

Talk to HR, there is no set way you HAVE to take maternity leave. You can take 8 weeks and 4 weeks later if you want. HTH

Re: WWYD? Maternity leave..

I wouldn't worry about making a good impression by shortening the maternity leave you are entitled to. Work on doing the best you can while you are actually there, enjoy your time off with your new baby, and return when you feel ready.

It won't do the kids any good if you come back after six weeks, but am worrying about your little one all day.

I had an intern take over for me on my last maternity leave and think your kids will be in good hands. She is already familiar with the school and the policies and will just have to implement your plans. Will she be able to come in to your classroom and meet your kids, observe, or co-teach with you before you leave? That might ease your mind about her taking over.

Also, if you don't want to take the full 12 weeks, would it be an option for you to go back part time (we call it job-sharing here)? You could take the first half of the day and let the student teacher do the afternoons.

Re: WWYD? Maternity leave..

I am a teacher and I planned on taking six weeks off but had a c-section so I got 8 weeks. I felt one way before baby, and after baby I was ready to quit because my job was miserable. I took most of the year off due to my own chronic illness which was great for me and my son but not so great for my classes. I had a hard time keeping a sub because I teach art and was split every day with an elementary in the morning and a horrible middle school in the afternoon. Last year was better but I was out a lot and could not get subs to cover or even get them to teach. If you find a good sub that is great. It is always hard to leave a baby but if they are with Dad I would feel better myself. I would play it by ear, but try to plan ahead and save as much as you can in case you do need the full 12 weeks. Good luck.
