My first Waldorf/soft doll :)

I have been enamored with Waldorf dolls, so I decided I wanted to make a Waldorf-inspired doll for my son.

I didn't want to have to wait for fabric to come in, and I'm better at knitting than sewing (even though I haven't really knit much in a few years) so I looked around online to see what I could find. I wanted one I could felt.

This is the pattern I used, for the most part. It was a little confusing in places but I figured it out and improvised (and maybe I'm just a bit rusty from not knitting in so long!):

I don't know how to crochet and wanted boyish hair, so I just winged it to make the wig. I used this tutorial in order to make loops. It didn't turn out exactly as I envisioned, but I think it's still cute and my son loves the hair. I might redo it eventually and tweak it a bit to fit the head better.

I was originally going to put something in it for extra weight, but the materials are pretty hefty, especially since the shell is felted wool and the stuffing is cotton fabric.

I was going to use a lighter colored yarn but when I went to Michaels (the only place open, other than Walmart, when I decided I just HAD to start knitting right away) there weren't many options for this yarn. The cream color was soooo light, so I thought this color would show fewer dirt/marks/stains.

For the stuffing, I used one of his baby towels (the edges had started to unravel) that my sister gave me at my baby shower, and one of my favorite maternity shirts that I wore a lot when I was pregnant for him. I still wear it sometimes (it's just a long-sleeved shirt and it's really comfy) but it had started to show wear. I wore it for awhile before using it for stuffing, so hopefully it has some of my scent on it for him. I almost cried when I cut into it, though! But I like that it has sentimental items for the stuffing.

Overall, I'm really happy with how it turned out! And he seems to like it so far. It's still nameless. I don't know if I should name him or just wait to see what he calls it?

I will make clothes for him eventually, but for now he's in a newborn onesie (that was my son's) and he's wearing a Thirsties Duo diaper cover, haha.

He loves the hair! haha

I wish this picture wasn't blurry. He dragged it over to read books this morning.

Re: My first Waldorf doll :)

I finished this last night. My son woke up right after, and was super upset and not feeling well. I snuggled with him on the couch but he was really fussy. I showed him the doll and he smiled, then started to play with the hair. I laid the doll over him and he kept feeling it, holding the arms, putting his fingers in the hair... then he fell asleep! It was so sweet.
