Heather & Jaime- Thanks for the input. The closest Joann's is about 2 hrs away and won't be going there anytime soon. There is a local quilt shop that has a small selection of flannel, but it is $9-10 a yard so I didn't want to buy any of it if I am going to have the same results after washing; I think I would cry over some fabric if that happened! I do have a Hancock's near so I might go and check out their flannel, but if it's like the rest of their fabric, it's pretty much hit or miss on quality.

Heather-another option for the one layer would be to turn under the edges and topstitch like you would a napkin or tablecloth.

Rachel- That is something I was thinking of trying. I do have another overlock stitch on my machine that is for hems so I think I will give that a shot. It just doesn't have that "finished" look with the overlock stitch over the cut edge.
