Re: Snowsuits/puffy coats and car seats don't mix! How to keep your kid warm AND saf

Thanks for the reminders. I don't think about this ever since I live in Florida but if we travel it's good to know. I haven't seen snow in over ten years and my kids never have so now we know if ever we take them anywhere cold.

Re: Snowsuits/puffy coats and car seats don't mix! How to keep your kid warm AND saf

I posted this type of info on FB and one of my friends asked:

"We still have Kate in a 5-point harness convertible seat (she's almost 6, 44" and 43 lbs.). Do you know - are retractable seat belts safer with winter coats, or do they have the same issue, perhaps to a lesser degree? We were talking about possibly taking the harness of and using her seat as a booster."

any input?

Ask what seat she has, first. But she would have the same issue of compression with a booster, and if it's combo seat that turns into a booster, the lap belt is likely already up on the abdomen. That issue combined with the compression means she's at higher risk for submarining or sliding under the seatbelt. She needs the bulky gear off either way--and so do adults. I unzip my coat and put the belt under it.

Thanks so much. I'd been told not to use coats but never understood why. I figured if it passed the pinch test like you showed it was fine. I'm glad you put this up because now I understand how dangerous it really is. I shared on FB too to get the word out. Thank!
