how to strip prefolds?

Someone mentioned to me "stripping" the prefolds I have by putting them in the dishwasher. Can you give me the instructions for that? (I mean, do I use detergent, just one run, etc....) Thanks!!

I didn't think they needed to be stripped. Do they have buildup? Do you only wash w/ one detergent?

Re: how to strip prefolds?

are you talking about new pfs? if they are new they just need to waxy fibers to be stripped off of them. if that's the case they just need to be washed in plain hot water several times before initial use.

Re: how to strip prefolds?

We have had these particular prefolds since our twins were babes. (They are 5 years old now.) Since trying to use them on the twins, we've used them as burp cloths, clean up milk cloths, and .... sometimes cleaning cloths. Not all of them were used, but probably many of them. I don't know if I just need to just wash them to get them ready for the new baby or something else. Someone on another board mentioned stripping them.

Re: how to strip prefolds?

I stripped my prefolds once. They've been used for about a year and they had a little detergent buildup. Not bad, but they had a little bit of a funny smell when the pee hit them. So I put them in the washer on a heavy duty cycle hot wash with a few pots of boiling water, no detergent. Then an extra hot rinse to be sure. They were fine after that.
