Re: If you had a homebirth, with older siblings around.

My 5yo wants to help catch the baby. I'm not sure if that will happen but I have decided that of all 4 kids, I will wake her up if I am in labor in the middle of the night (but not until I am pushing, of course). I really want her to see it if she can (and she really wants too, as well), because at her age she will actually remember it.

Re: If you had a homebirth, with older siblings around.

DS and DD slept through all 2 hours of my labor.
When they woke up they were very excited, and I would not have made them go back to sleep if they did happen to wake up. It was nice not to have to wory about them and just deal with the moment.

Re: If you had a homebirth, with older siblings around.

I really wanted my 2 1/2 year old there until I was actually in the moment. I had a cervical lip and was screaming my head off. I labored overnight (which I hear a LOT of homebirth moms with kids do...) and he was born in the morning. The plan was to wake her at the end, but we chose not to since I was in so much pain. My screaming woke her up though so she came out right as he was coming out. It ended up being perfect! We had someone there specifically to take care of her, but also had a great doula in case she wanted DH.

The last two were born in the middle of the night. My teenagers and 10 year old I woke up. But the others i just wole up for a 'meet the baby' moement and then they went back to bed.

I wouldn't wake up a 3.5 year old, not on purpose.

My oldest ds wanted to be present, so we woke him up around 5 am (dd was born at 6:19am), he is 5 and did great, he did leave the room while I was pushing because he said out was too loud (ima screamer when pushing).

Ds2, ob the other hand, I did not want to be present, I kicked it into high gear when I heard him stirring, lol. He woke up just after she arrived

If it's the middle of the night do you think she'll fall back asleep easily after baby comes?

Both my boys were there and did great. During the worst part of it they snacked and watched tv(ds2 never watched tv normally) they'd come see me and then go back and watch tv. The saw there brother being born and were as in love with him as i was.

My dd will only be just over two and I would like her to be there but with my sister in case she needs to be away. I wouldn't wake her in the night I don't think. Anyone else with a younger big sibling want to weigh in?

Re: If you had a homebirth, with older siblings around.

I decided I didn't want my DD (2.5 at the time DS was born) to be there because I couldn't mother her and birth at the same time. I thought about having someone there specifically to care for her, but I never figured out who the right person for that would be, and I knew she would probably just want to be with me anyway.

She slept through the entire labor and birth, and woke up once all the cleanup was done. It could not have been any more perfect.

Re: If you had a homebirth, with older siblings around.

DD and DS were both born in the middle of the night so I'm anticipating another night birth. But if it's during the day this time, there will be plenty of people around to corral them if they don't want to be in w/ me or get scared or whatever.
