Sick kid question

Ok I don't have much experience with sick kids yet...dd is 14mo and hasn't been sick too often. So here's what's going on. Last night while she was playing I noticed she felt a little warm, checked her temp with an ear thermometer- 100.0. She continued to play and act fine. Got up this morning, acting fine, checked her temp again, still 100.0. Then (gross alert) she had her first blowout diaper that she's had in MONTHS, and it was naaaasty. She was in a sposie (try to catch her poops in sposies since I'm pregnant and gag when trying to clean a cloth diaper.). Checked her temp after cleaning her up, 100.4. She's still acting fine and eating fine.

We're supposed to go and be volunteering at our church's fall festival tonight. Do you think I need to keep her home?

Re: Sick kid question

I would. Usually when you have a fever you are contagious. Its a low grade, so maybe it has to do with teething but to be safe, I'd keep her home. I'd feel bad if she developed other symptoms later and had been around other people who were exposed.

ETA: I found some helpful info on "ask Dr. Sears".

TOP THREE CAUSES

Viral infection – this is the most common cause of fever in children. Examples are: Roseola, Colds, Flu, Coxsackie (hand, foot and mouth disease), Chicken Pox, Fifth Disease, and many others. Most viruses are not dangerous. They simply need to run their course over several days. They are not treatable with antibiotics.

Bacterial infection – Some examples include ear infection, sinus infection, pneumonia, bladder infection, and strep throat. These are treatable with antibiotics, although treatment can usually wait 12 hours until you can contact you doctor in the morning.

Teething– this can cause fevers, though usually not higher than 101.

WHAT TEMPERATURE CONSTITUTES A FEVER?

Normal temperature – 97 to 99 degrees (36 to 37.2 Celcius).
Low-grade fever – 99 to 100.9 degrees (37.3 to 38.3 Celcius).
Common fever – 101 to 103.5 degrees (38.4 to 39.7 Celcius).
High fever – any fever over 103.6 degrees (39.8 Celcius).

SHOULD I TREAT A LOW GRADE FEVER?

No. Low-grade fevers are helpful in fighting off infection. You should only treat a fever when it is making your child miserable. Treat your child, not the fever.

ARE FEVERS DANGEROUS?

No. Many parents have a misconception that fevers are a bad thing and a sign that there is some serious underlying illness. This simply is not true. Fever is a normal and healthy response of the body to an illness. The body's immune system releases chemicals that raise the body temperature. This is part of the normal infection-fighting process.

Re: Sick kid question

I was thinking of putting a bowl of candy out on the porch, but it looks like all activities are cancelled due to rain anyway. Poor dd has been asleep for 4.5 hours I hope she wakes up with a lower fever, not a higher one.
