5yr old just got off the bus with a bite in arm....

My DS just showed me a bite his friend gave him on the bus. It went right through his winter coat and scraped the skin and left a bruise on his arm. He said his friend that he sits with did it for no reason....they were not fighting or goofing.... He did not tell the driver. Would you call the child's mom to let her know...more as an FYI? I do know her and have called her before for play dates etc. I know I would want to know if my child did that..... but I don't want to offend.

Definitely call. Some response is needed so the child understands this is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. The bus service should also be notified so they can watch the child closer.

If she's a Mom that you see occasionally, I'd wait until you can talk to her about it face to face. That way, she can more accurately see that you're not completely ticked off and that you just wanted to make her aware. If my kids were biting someone, I'd definitely want to know!

You should call her and let her know. Don't send an email. Let her know the bus driver was informed, and s/he might have reported it as well.

If the shoe were on the other foot, you'd appreciate her call, right?

Yes, call her right now. She needs to speak to her child about it while it is still relevant. I would call her and call the bus company. The driver may be required to make a report to the school.

I agree with the bolded. It's amazing what 5 year olds will forget even over the course of a few hours.

I would probably report it to the school and let the school handle it.

Thanks for all your advice. I did call the Mother and told her. She was Ok, a bit short with me..but OK. I think I will hold off reporting it to the bus and hope it is a one-off as the boys are good friends.

I'm glad you called her. She was probably short because she was embarrassed. Another thing I didn't think of until now is that it is good to touch base with the other mom because we never know if there is more to the story. My DS and his best school friend have these little spats where DS tells me part and the other kid tells his mom part, and we have to put it all together when the need presents.
