GD: lowering fasting blood sugar levels?
I have been doing great on my new GD diet and really liking it. Other than Halloween...no candy!
The only trouble I have is my fasting numbers are always still between 90-95. I have been treatened (probably not the right word) with meds due to this slightly high number and that doesnt seem right but I want the numbers to be normal. ![]() All other numbers throughout the day are good- as long as I excersize at least 10 minutes after each meal. Any tips? I even tried eating in the middle of the night and it was still 91.

Re: GD: lowering fasting blood sugar levels?
I'm no longer prego, but did have gd and need to take insulin.
I always found my fasting number was higher if I didn't eat a large enough night time snack. We were suppose to eat 15-30 grams of carbs and I always ate more. Like a HUGE bowl of cereal. If that doesn't help....then you might need some meds. |

Re: GD: lowering fasting blood sugar levels?
Make sure you are eating a good amount of protein with your bedtime snack as well. I was allowed 30-45 grams of carbs at bedtime whenever I've had GD.

Re: GD: lowering fasting blood sugar levels?
Sometimes there isn't anything you can do/eat to keep the fasting number down. I tried eating a big snack (enough to make my tummy upset to try and lay down with that much food,) and waking up in the middle of the night for a snack. Neither helped, now I'm on both types of insulin. Most of it has to do with your hormones levels (which are way higher at night & early morning,) and not so much with what you eat. Even the specialist told me you can only control blood glucose levels so much with diet & exercise.

Re: GD: lowering fasting blood sugar levels?
what does your Dr want your fasting numbers to be? Mine are usually upper 80s to a high of 95 everyday but as long as they are under 105 they are good for my dr.

Re: GD: lowering fasting blood sugar levels?
that's the thing...I havent seen my Dr. since I have started taking my levels. My next appt. isnt until next wed so I will find out then. i hope it's the same. the diabetes educator I am working with at the hospital says her numbers she likes me to stick to are much more strict than most. She wants them to be below 90. Thankfully...if I get up a eat between 3-5 (who wants to do that) then I have no trouble in the AM. So I have a couple pretzels and a piece of cheese and that holds me over I guess until breakfast. At least it has worked the past couple days anyway. Lets hope it stays that way.

Re: GD: lowering fasting blood sugar levels?
The funnything is if you eat between 3-5am it's not really a fasting level (but it will help the number lol!). The only thing that worked for me was insulin. The pills made it drop too low and I'd wake up in a near shock state and need sugar.
Come to find out after pregnancy my normal fasting is between 90-100. I have been tested though over 6 months and do not have diabetes.

The fasting level was the only one I had trouble with, and I had GD with my last 2 pregnancies. Eating protein before bed (even a spoonful of natural peanut butter) helped. Good luck!
