Can We Name Our Kid This?

I love the name Declan if it's a boy, but we're not Irish. I'm 1/4 British and there are Irish ancestors in both of our families, but we don't really identify ourselves as Irish. DH likes the name too (which is a big deal because we never agree on names) but he thinks people will think we're weird if our child has such a strong Irish sounding name and we don't look Irish.

What do you think? If you met me in the street and I told you my kid's name was Declan, would you think that was weird? Do you think it's the kind of name that people would ask him his whole life if he's Irish every time he tells someone his name?

Why would it be weird? It's a nice name.

My kids ARE Irish, and they all have Irish names and NEVER have they been asked if they are Irish. Two of them are even red heads. LOL! I've met many little kids named Declan. All looked different and none looked Irish. America's a melting pot so I say embrace it and name him Declan. Its cute!

I really like the name. I just looked it up and it means full of goodness. Not sure where you live but I wouldn't question someone's ethnicity based on name alone.

Re: Can We Name Our Kid This?

Nowadays it is definitely not weird. People use names for their kids from all sorts of origins... Whether they have it in their own blood or not!
FWIW, my name is of French origin and I don't have a drop of French in me that anyone in my family is aware of (if it is in there, it is hidden and waaaay back in the family tree, we know our recent ancestry). No one has ever asked if I am French... Until they find out I am Canadian anyway
