$10,000 for one day in the hospital? UPDATE #18
Our insurance has online paperwork - so I am looking at what all is coming through and there is a bill for "in patient hospital" under MY name (so for me) that is over $10,000....that doesn't seem right?!?! We were there for 26 hrs after delivery. AND I pre registered and my "estimated" bill said it would be $3400 (I paid my 10% of $343) ...it hasn't been fully processed yet so I can't see all the information for it but it says "my" portion would be $1200 ....I can't imagine what I am paying for...NONE of my kids births cost that much at the hospital - all have been between $400-$700 (depending on what our insurance was) I am SHOCKED!
Anyone else started getting bills for their births? Oh and our anesthesiologist was "out of network" bummer - that bill was just $170 though - phew!

Re: $10,000 for one day in the hospital???!!!
The hospital billed our insurance $8000 for me, $1000 for LO, and our OB billed $4500 for delivery.
I totally understand why people can't afford health care...

Re: $10,000 for one day in the hospital???!!!
With my first the hospital billed over $14K for ME. Yeah I was SHOCKED. Even with insurance I paid the max out of pocket for myself and my newborn was in a similar situation.
With my second we had a different insurance company and the same hospital. The hospital wanted $10K and the insurance contract agreed to give them less than $3,000. A big part if who your insurance is and the discount you get in network. ETA: the first birth it was billed as 'days' but the second it was billed by the hour, I think that was a big factor. |

Re: $10,000 for one day in the hospital???!!!
I didnt see a bill for myself from this delivery since it was at a military hospital. But with dd I just got a few of her bills b/c I was at a civilian hospital and it took a little while for her insurance to catch up with her... I never saw my bills from her delivery (c-section) either. But wow, that is so much more than I expected!

Re: $10,000 for one day in the hospital???!!!
Okay - it looks like this:
$1400 billed, $1081 eligible expense (so how much insurance agrees it is worth), my part $270, $811 paid by plan...then there is another one $9667 billed, $7250 eligible expense, my part $1433, $5816 paid by plan. I am confused because we did pre-register with the hospital and I got an "estimated" bill which said it would be $3400 and my 10% co-insurance would be $343...how in the world would/could the hospital not know that their "estimate" was off by $8000...I think there must be a mistake...we have had 2 other kids at this hospital...I need to go find those bills and see what we were charged/billed initially. Maybe those 2 "in-patient" bills (EOB) are one for me and one for baby....any reason why baby would be THAT expensive?? She roomed in with me the whole time, ..... Oh I just thought of something....would the hospital bill as "in patient" if she went for an ultrasound?? It was really quick scan on her back to look at the sachal (sp?) dimple on her hiney... I thought that was billed through the pediatrician...but I could be wrong?? I know this does NOT include my ob and does not include the pediatrician for kiddo or the anesthesiologist I sure hope those 3 meals were not that expensive - they were NOT worth that!

Re: $10,000 for one day in the hospital???!!!
![]() ![]() That's nuts. We keep thanking our lucky stars that we live in Canada - LO has been to the pedi a number of times, plus a hospital visit, plus all of our midwife appointments and the (albeit home) birth. There is no way we could afford it even with insurance in the States.

I believe it. I have no idea what insurance actually paid in the end, but my 6 day stay with DS was billed at just over $100,000.

Re: $10,000 for one day in the hospital???!!!
Yep! That sounds about right! I commend your for looking and if you need to, you can go to the hospital and ask for the itemized version. Or, maybe they can email it to ya! The hospitals are notorious for charging for procedures that they never even did! I would definitely look into it! With the doctors' insurance going over and healthcare supplies at a high demand, the price of everything is grossly inflated. This is why I don't understand why insurance companies aren't quick to jump on midwifery and birthing center care.
For DD, our insurance only had to pay our midwife $3500! They would rather pay tens of thousands?! Mind-boggling! And I betcha your care your entire pregnancy wasn't even worth 10 grand! Ha! That's the system for ya!
